Christian singles invited to dinner

Traverse City -- The Traverse Area Christian Singles Fellowship invites all area Christians to join them for dinner on Nov. 14. Reservations are due Wednesday.

Turkey dinner 'like grandma made'

Elk Rapids -- A roast turkey dinner with all the trimmings and homemade desserts will be served on Friday.

The meal will be available from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, 301 Traverse. The cost is $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 to 11, and free for children ages 3 and younger. For details, call 267-5792.

Orthodox church hosts music seminar

TRAVERSE CITY -- A seminar focusing on the function and purpose of music in the church is being held today from 9 a.m. to noon.

The course, presented by the religious education department of the Traverse City Orthodox Mission Church, will cover the purpose of music in the church, some teachings on the importance and function of music and an introduction to traditional church chant and singing.

The seminar will be led by Rebekah Olechnowicz, a former chanter and choir director of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Farmington Hills.

Concert will benefit Love INC of GT

Traverse City -- The fall benefit concert for Love INC (In the Name of Christ) of Grand Traverse has been revamped and expanded.

"Love Fest: An Evening of Christian Music" will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church, 1025 S. Union St., with a silent auction, chili supper and live entertainment. Guests are encouraged to bid on silent auction items until 8:30 p.m. The meal will be served until 7:30 p.m. and costs $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 11 and younger. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the evening.

The main concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Featured performers are The Saving Sara Project, Cherry Blossom Ramblers, Barbara Faith Jordan, Jim Hawley & Friends, Drew Hale, Marshall and Mary Collins, Fred Szczepanski and Joe Shoup. A free-will offering will be accepted.

All proceeds will go into the Love INC Crisis Fund, which helps Grand Traverse County residents with emergency needs. For details, call the Love INC office, 941-5683.

'Christmas on the Peninsula' bazaar

Traverse City -- The Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church will hold its "Christmas on the Peninsula" bazaar on Nov. 14.

The bazaar will feature hand-crafted items, a bake sale and a gift corner. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church, 16426 Center Road.

Advance orders also will be taken for the church's new cookbook.

Festival of Trees will open on Nov. 14

Kalkaska -- Kalkaska area volunteers are finalizing plans for the annual Festival of Trees to benefit Kalkaska Area Interfaith Resources (KAIR).

The event will feature more than 30 decorated trees, a decorated electric fireplace and numerous items that will be raffled or

The festival will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily Nov. 14 through 21 at Northland Plaza, the corner of M-72 and U.S. 131. Admission is free.

Big band show helps Christian schools

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Bay Area Big Band will perform a benefit concert for the Traverse City Christian Schools.

Proceeds from the Friday show will go towards student scholarships. The 17-piece band will feature performances by vocalists Miriam Pico and John Pomeroy.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m. at New Hope Community Church, 5169 Bethesda Court, Williamsburg. Breakfast benefits food coalition

TRAVERSE CITY -- The St. Patrick's Men's Club will serve a benefit pancake breakfast Sunday. All proceeds will go the Northwest Michigan Food Coalition, thanks to an anonymous donor at St. Patrick's.

Breakfast, which will include pancakes, sausage, cheesy hash browns, applesauce and beverages, costs $5.50 for adults, $3.50 children and $20 family. Children under 5 eat for free. Additional donations are welcome.

Bill Marsh starts up a clothing drive

TRAVERSE CITY -- A clothing drive will provide cold-weather gear to Safe Harbor, which will in turn distribute it to needy people in Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Benzie counties.

The Bill Marsh Clothing Drive is in its third year and is seeking new and used coats, hats, gloves. boots and socks. Drop-off boxes are set up at Bill Marsh locations on Garfield Avenue and U.S. 31 South. Clothing can also be dropped off at the Bill Marsh center on Barlow Street in Traverse City and at Dan McCormick's Ford dealership in Kalkaska.

Safe Harbor is a cooperative arrangement with area churches that offers homeless people to have a safe place to sleep and warm meals.

DivorceCare series starts Thursday

TRAVERSE CITY -- A 13-week session of DivorceCare divorce recovery seminar and support group will begin Thursday at First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road.

A light supper will be served at the first meeting.

The seminar is a weekly video series and support group for people who are separated or divorced. There's a $1 per week donation to cover program expenses. Child care is available when planned ahead. The first session is titled "What's Happening To Me?"

Grawn church serving breakfast

GRAWN -- The Grawn United Methodist Church will be serving a pancake breakfast Nov. 15 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The breakfast will be held at the church, 1260 W. Silver Lake Road. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 4 to 11 and free for children under 4.

Operation Christmas Child will collect

TRAVERSE CITY -- Operation Christmas Child Northern Michigan is holding its collection week Nov. 16-23.

Shoeboxes of standard size can be filled with personal hygiene items, toys, school supplies, shoes, jewelry, gum and more. A $7 donation to cover shipping is encouraged. The boxes are distributed around the world.

Collection centers are: Faith Reformed Church, 1139 E. Front St.; WLJN Radio, 1101 Cass St.; the Adams residence, 474 Wawa Trail in Buckley; Kalkaska United Methodist Church, 2525 Beebe Road; Leelanau Community Church, 245 S. Knights of Columbus presents monument

ACME -- Christ the King Church in Acme recently received a monument from the Knights of Columbus Council 9979.

The monument reads, "Sanctity of Human Life from Conception to Death." Engraved on the rock is a hand holding a fetus, encircled by the words, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you -- God."

Cadets wil be serving spaghetti

ELLSWORTH -- A spaghetti dinner Wednesday will benefit the Atwood/Ellsworth Cadets.

The dinner will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church, 932 Main St. Donations will go towards club expenses.

Cadets is an independent youth ministry organization that works with local churches to share Christ's love with boys from the church and community through Bible study, merit badges, outdoor skills playing and more.

Christ the King has a craft sale today

ACME -- Christ the King holds its annual craft show today.

There will be crafts, a bake sale, a raffle for items including handmade quilts, and a homemade lunch with a variety of soupds.

The sale runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The church is at 3801 Shore Road in Acme, next to Tom's. For more information, call 938-9214.

Buckley Tabernacle hosting craft sale

BUCKLEY -- The Buckley Tabernacle is holding a craft sale today from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be crafts -- including woodworking and jewelry -- a bake sale and a silent auction. Lunch will be available.
