Church is serving free T'giving dinner

GRAWN -- The Grawn United Methodist Church will be serving free Thanksgiving dinner.

The dinner will be held on Thanksgiving day, Nov. 26, from noon to 2 p.m. Dinner will include turkey and all the fixings.

The church is at 1260 W. Silver Lake Road. For more information, call 943-8353.

Church hosts Advent open house

traverse city -- An Advent open house will be held at the Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church Nov. 29.

There will be crafts for children and light refreshments. The open house will run from 10 to 11 a.m.; worship services begin at 11 a.m.

Music event helps feed the hungry

TRAVERSE CITY -- "Hungry for Hope" will benefit the Northwest Michigan Food Coalition.

The Nov. 22 concert, which will re-create the sounds of B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaugh, Keb Mo and others, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Nov. 22 at the church, just off Airport Access Road. A nonperishable food is the freewill offering.

"The blues have grown from expressions of people's suffering," said the Rev. David Ramage, a member of neXus and a leader of the informal worship gathering that's held every Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church, 701 Westminster Road.

Advent healing service Nov. 28

TRAVERSE CITY -- An Advent healing service will be held at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church Nov. 28.

There will be sharing, prayers, scriptures, meditation and music to help those who mourn and struggle during the holiday season. The service begins at 4 p.m., with pre-service harp music beginning at 3:45 p.m.

Interfaith T'giving service Nov. 23

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Bay United Methodist Church, Congregation Beth El and the All Saints Anglican Church will host an interfaith Thanksgiving service Monday.

The service will be held at the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church at the corner of Bay and Ramsdell streets beginning at 7 p.m.

Music will be provided by choirs from Central United Methodist Church, the Peninsula Bible Church, First Congregational Church and others. Speakers include Reb Seth Castleman of Congregation Ahavat Shalom, the Rev. Kurt Henle of All Saints Anglican Church as well as representatives from First Christian Church, St. Francis Catholic Church and Central United Methodist Church.

A freewill offering will be collected for Safe Haven Ministries for the Homeless. For more information, call the Rev. Jane Lippert, 946-5323.

Christmas help, donations needed

TRAVERSE CITY -- Volunteers and donations are needed for the annual Community Christmas Dinner.

The dinner is held on Christmas from 1 to 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 13th and Maple in Traverse City. Items needed include cold-weather clothing for adults and children, sweatshirts for men and women, boots of all sizes and "survival kits" of personal hygiene items.

Volunteers are needed for driving, to deliver meals, for cleanup and to serve dinner. Money is also needed. Checks can be made out to Community Meals Program, with a notation of "Christmas dinner," and mailed to Community Meals Program, P.O. Box 102, Traverse City MI 49685.

Annual Messiah Sing set for Dec. 6

TRAVERSE CITY -- The annual "Messiah Sing" will be held at Dec. 6.

The community performance will be at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., beginning at 4 p.m.

Singers interested in participating should be at a rehearsal scheduled for 2:45 p.m. No prior experience is required, and first-timers are encouraged to take part. Scores will be available.

Byron Hanson, recently retired from the Interlochen Center for the Arts, will conduct. A chamber orchestra will accompany the singers.

Soloists, all of whom took part last year, include soprano Lynne Church; mezzo-soprano Wendee Wolf-Schlarf, tenor Isaac Hurtado and bass-baritone Jeffery Norris.

There is no admission charge, but a free-will offering will be taken to defray expenses. For more information, call 946-5191.

Guest pastor Sunday is David Bast

TRAVERSE CITY -- First Congregational Church hosts guest pastor David Bast Sunday.

Bast is the president and radio minister of Words of Hope, a worldwide radio ministry that reaches otherwise inaccessible regions with the gospel preached in indigenous languages.

Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at the intersection of Center Road and Peninsula Drive.

'Christmas in Paradise' in Dec.

GAYLORD -- Mount Hope Church in Gaylord is presenting "A Christmas in Paradise" Dec. 4-6.

The musical comedy/drama is a story about a group of travelers marooned on Christmas Even at a small-town airport in Iowa.

The play will be performed in the church's auditorium, one mile east of Gaylord on M-32 at 7 p.m. each night. Admission is free, but a ticket is required. Tickets are available by calling the church office, (989) 732-4245, or online at www.gaylordchurch.com.
