Christmas program tonight in Gaylord

GAYLORD -- The Gaylord Chamber Orchestra will celebrate the Christmas season with a performance of Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors" at 7:30 p.m. today at St. Mary's Cathedral.

The Christmas story set to music will be performed complete with costumes, chorus and orchestra.

Guests include acclaimed vocalists Nicole Philibosian as Amahl's mother, Ron Gentry, Jeffrey Norris and Aaron Ingersoll as the Three Kings, Hannah Stoppel as Amahl and Nolen Gentry as a dancer. In addition to the Gaylord Chamber Orchestra, a chorus of community members will be directed by Jan Johnson.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and are available at Saturn Booksellers or at the door. For details, call (989) 731-4422.

Live nativity at Bayview Wesleyan

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bayview Wesleyan Church will present its annual Live Nativity from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

The Christmas Eve presentation will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. The church is located at 720 Wayne St. in Traverse City. For details, call the church office, 947-3792.

K of C sponsors free throw contest

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Knights of Columbus will sponsor its annual Free Throw Competition Jan. 3 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Middle School Gym, 1601 Three Mile Road. Warm-up begins at 8:45 a.m. The competition starts at 9:30 a.m. The competition is for boys and girls ages 9 to 14 as of Jan. 1, 2009, who will compete in their respective age bracket. Proof of age is required at registration.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, regional and state competitions. Last year more than 179,000 sharpshooters participated in more than 3,000 local competitions.

International champions are announced by the Knights of Columbus' international headquarters based on scores from state-level competitions.

Participants should obtain a registration form at http://kofc.webhop.net. Neatly print all required information in ink; have parents complete their portion and show up between 8:45 and 9:15 a.m. for registration with completed form and proof of age. The local event is sponsored by Christ the King Council 9979. For details, call 947-7033 or 946-8277.

Style and modesty both in fashion

ACME -- New Hope Community Church will be the venue for a Jan. 10 fashion and makeover show that focuses on "real beauty."

The "Modest is Hottest" fashion focus from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. encourages women to realize their beauty and self-worth based on God's standards.

The event is sponsored by Proverbs 31 Ministries. Nationally recognized image consultant Shari Braendel will share practical style advice on how to present positive assets in a modest and feminine fashion. The event includes break-out sessions for girls ages 8 to 12, teens, and married and single adult women.

Topics include styles that suit different body types, color analysis, makeup trends, body image and what men think about these things. Area businesses will provide sample services, products and prize giveaways. Tickets are $20 and include lunch. Scholarship tickets are available for those who need assistance. Tickets can be purchased at Rainbow Bookstore and WLJN in Traverse City, or by calling Clarissa Kniss, 258-8432.

New Hope Community Church is located on U.S. 31 N., three miles north of the Grand Traverse Resort.
