DivorceCare seminar and support group

Traverse City — A 13-week video seminar series will be offered for individuals who are separated or divorced.

DivorceCare will meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Aug. 5 through Oct. 28, at First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road. A light supper will be served at the first session.

Each session combines videos with support group discussion of the material presented each week, and anyone may join the group at any time. A $1 per week donation is requested to cover program expenses, and child care is available when planned in advance. Donations for child care are appreciated.

Fundraiser benefits Haitian orphanage

Acme — Christ Community Church will sponsor a motorcycle ride, a barbecue and silent auction on Saturday, Aug. 7, to raise money for its new orphanage in St. Marc, Haiti.

Registration for the ride starts at 9 a.m. at Fox Yamaha. The scenic ride on Old Mission Peninsula will leave at 11 a.m. The cost is $25 per bike and a $5 donation for food for passengers.

The ride fee includes a barbecue from noon to 3 p.m. at Grawn United Methodist Church, 1260 W. Silver Lake Road. The public is invited, and a silent auction also will be held. Call 357-5258 to learn more.

St. Michael's holds mega tent sale

Suttons Bay — St. Michael's Catholic Church is finalizing plans for its second mega tent sale.

The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, through Saturday, Aug. 7, on the church grounds, 118 Elm St. In addition to a wide variety of gently used and new items, there will be a table of special cherry baked goods. Additional food will be available.

Proceeds of the sale will go toward future construction of a parish social hall. For details, call 271-3744.

Seminary president speaks at service

Leland — Dr. Cornelius "Neal" Plantinga Jr. will be the guest speaker Sunday, Aug. 8, at Leland Summer Church.

Dr. Plantinga is president and the Charles W. Colson Professor of Theology at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids. He will address the congregation at the 9:30 a.m. Summer Church service at Leland Community United Methodist Church, 106 N. Fourth St.

VBS takes children on the high seas

Acme — Children ages 4 through high school are invited to embark on a "High Seas Expedition" at Feast of Victory Lutheran Church.

Vacation Bible School will set sail at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, and continue from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. each evening through Thursday, Aug. 12. VBS will conclude with a worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 15. Children will discover God-given treasures each day. They also will participate in an "Operation Kid-to-Kid" international mission project by creating "God Loves Me" blankets to be distributed to children in Africa by World Vision.

Worship in the park and potluck lunch

Elk Rapids — Marshall and Mary Collins will join the Rev. Geri Litchfield for a community worship service to close Elk Rapids' Harbor Days celebration. The event is sponsored by Elk Rapids United Methodist Church.

The Collinses will bring their gospel music ministry to Veterans Memorial Park at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, for a service led by the Rev. Litchfield. A potluck lunch will follow. Those attending should bring a dish to share. Iced tea, lemonade and table service will be provided.

Prince of Peace VBS is for families

Traverse City — Vacation Bible School at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will include Bible study for all ages.

VBS will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, through Thursday, Aug. 12, at the church, 1776 High Lake Road. Children from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade will follow the Circle J dude ranch theme, while teens will focus on what the Bible has to say about specific issues in their lives. Adults are invited to participate in "Speaking the Truth in Love to Muslims," a Bible study aimed at learning about Islam and how a Christian can reach out to Muslims.

Leadership seminar simulcast in TC

TRAVERSE CITY — A seminar featuring speakers from the business, sports, church and literary worlds will be beamed via satellite to Bay Pointe Community Church.

The Global Leadership Seminar will be held Thursday and Friday, Aug. 5 and 6, in Illinois and simulcast at Bay Pointe. Among the speakers are Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric; Tony Dungy, Super Bowl-winning coach; and Jim Collins, a nationally acclaimed business thinker and author of "Built to Last."

Leo Creek Band plays 'On The Hill'

BEULAH — The Leo Creek Band will perform at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Sunday, Aug. 8.

The concert is a benefit for the Animal Welfare League of Benzie County. Proceeds will help pay for food and medical care for animals.

The Leo Creek Band includes Jack Dryden on bass, Roger Tarczon on drums, Tim Sparling on keyboard and Drew Abbott on guitar.

The 3 p.m. Concert on the Hill will be held outdoors at 8190 Lincoln Road rain or shine; bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Thrift store holding its summer sale

TRAVERSE CITY — White-tagged men's and women's clothing is half off through Sept. 15 at the First Congregational Church Thrift Shop.

Proceeds from the store benefit the Womens Fellowship and are used to support church programs and local missions.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; parking is available at the rear of the store, which is at 207 E. Eighth St.
