Munson Hospice offers family camp
TRAVERSE CITY -- Families who have experienced the loss of a significant family member or friend are invited to an overnight Family Fun Camp.
The camp will be held from 11 a.m. Aug. 21 to 11 a.m. Aug. 22 at the YMCA's Camp Hayo-Went-Ha. The experience allows families to have fun together and find a way to make a memorial for their lost loved one. Families also can participate in the camp's various activity options.

Walk-in health screening planned
CHARLEVOIX -- Charlevoix Area Hospital offers walk-in health screenings on the first Wednesday of each month. The next screening will be held Aug. 5.
Screenings will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. in classroom A at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Services include cholesterol and blood glucose levels, Body Mass Index score, and a blood pressure reading. The entire visit takes less than 15 minutes.
The cost is $12 and includes a blood pressure log, a pedometer and all test results at the time of the screening. For advance appointments, call the Office of Community Health Education, 547-8906. Walk-ins also are welcome.
Entries sought for postcard art exhibit
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northern Lakes Community Mental Health's first postcard art exhibition will focus on the theme "Look Closer: See Me For Who I Am."
The project is open to anyone in northern Michigan who is in recovery from a mental illness or serious emotional disturbance or living with a developmental disability. Postcards may be funny or serious, tell a story, make a statement or express feelings, thoughts, hopes and dreams. Artists may use collage, rubber stamps, painting, photography, drawing or writing.
Entries should be created on a 4 inch by 6 inch postcard and mailed to Northern Lakes CMH, Anti-Stigma and Recovery Project, 105 Hall St., Suite A, Traverse City, MI 49684. There is no entry fee and no limit on the number of entries. For an entry form, go to www.northernlakescmh.org/initiatives/?id=746. All entries must be labeled with the artist's name (first name and last initial accepted) and complete address and must be received through the mail by Sept. 1.
All entries, except those with profanity or violence, will be shared on the Northern Lakes CMH Virtual Recovery Center, www.northernlakescmh.org. Entries also will be displayed at "The Art of Recovery: The Human Journey" show Nov. 4 through 30 at InsideOut Gallery, 229 Garland St., where a public reception will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 4.
Driving program is being revived
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Northwest Michigan Transportation Alliance is being revived to provide transportation to people in need.
The alliance, formed several years ago to help low-income senior citizens, was disbanded about a year ago.
Now, through Americorps VISTA, a new manager has been hired and area agencies are starting to revive the program serving Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, Antrim and Kalkaska counties.
Angela Carter, of Traverse City, will direct the program out of the Disability Network office at 333 E. Front St. in Traverse City.
Volunteer drivers will receive a small stipend for mileage. Those using the service will pay a nominal fee to defray expenses.
Volunteer drivers are needed, and recruitment is under way.

Hospital hopes to cut readmissions
CHARLEVOIX -- Charlevoix Area Hospital is one of 10 independent hospitals in the state participating in a national pilot project to reduce "rehospitalizations."
The program targets readmissions that are not expected or scheduled but are related to the initial admission. The program seeks to reduce these by 30 percent by increasing patient satisfacation and coordinating care and transitions, among other things.
Dinner benefits Ken Doty and his family
MANCELONA -- A benefit dinner for Ken Doty will be held at the East Jordan Tourist Park July 29 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
A silent auction, raffle and can drive are also scheduled.
Doty was the building inspector for Charlevoix County. He was first diagnosed with cancer in September 2006; doctors recently stopped treatment.
A dinner of hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, chips, dessert and drinks costs $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 5 to 12, and $20 for families. Cash donations are welcome and can be sent care of Ken and Lori Doty - Northwestern Bank of Charlevoix, 1425 Bridge St., Charlevoix MI 49720.
