Habitat to hold three application sessions

TRAVERSE CITY -- Don't be afraid to apply -- that is what Nancy Kiogima, family services manager for Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region, wants people to know.

"I think a lot of families disqualify themselves without ever applying," said Kiogima, noting that Habitat for Humanity is willing to work with families with a less than perfect credit history.

Families and individuals who want to find out if they qualify for the program that builds affordable homes in partnership with low-income families are invited to attend one of three local application fairs.

Representatives from Habitat for Humanity will be on hand to explain the qualifications for home ownership and accept applications during sessions to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, and 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, in the Grand Traverse Mall community room. Another application session will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at St. Mary's School, 303 S. St. Mary's St. in Lake Leelanau.

Kiogima said Habitat for Humanity-Grand Traverse Region is hoping to build 10 homes next year and would like to be able to qualify 10 families during the application fairs.

"People struggle with the amount of debt that is allowable, but we are willing to work with the individuals to get their scores in line," said Kiogima, noting that those who don't qualify this year may be able to in the future by becoming part of Habitat's credit repair program.

"We will have a budget counselor and credit counselor work with them to get ready to apply for the following year," said Kiogima, noting that families are selected based on need, ability to make house payments of approximately $400 to $450 per month and a willingness to partner with Habitat by fulfilling 275 hours per adult of sweat equity by attending home ownership educational classes, helping to build their home and work on other Habitat projects.

"We will still work with them to get them back on track," she said.

Prospective applicants and the general public are invited to the application fairs. Registration is not required, but is appreciated by calling Nancy Kiogima at 941-4663. Child care will not be provided. You must attend the presentation to be considered for a home.
