College Fair

Interlochen — Interlochen Center for the Arts will hold a college fair today, July 16.

More than 50 colleges and conservatories will be on hand from 2 to 4 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium to help college-bound students interested in music, dance, theater, visual arts, graphic design and other related disciplines.

The fair is free and open to the public.

Exhibit opening

Suttons Bay — A reception will be hosted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, at Martha's Leelanau Table, 413 N. St. Joseph St., for an exhibit by Kathy Brady.

"Handmade Paper, Deckled Edges and More" will be on display through Sept. 9.

Crockett birthday

Traverse City — Folk poet Jim Crockett will celebrate his 70th birthday with a reading from his latest poetry collection "Exit Wounds" Tuesday, July 17, at Brilliant Books, 118 E. Front St.

During his appearance at 7 p.m., Crockett also will read new poems and sign his books. A birthday reception will follow. For details, call 946-2665.

'Hit the Wall' exhibit

Beulah — L'Chayim Delicatessen's summer art series features Ron Gianola, whose contemporary paintings express the effects of light through color.

The exhibit opens with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at L'Chayim's Beulah location, where Gianola's art will be featured for a month. The exhibit then will move to the deli's Frankfort location for a month. Call 882-5221 or email lchayimdeli@hotmail.com.

Scavenger hunt

Mancelona — Explore different environments on a nature scavenger hunt Thursday, July 19, at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies.

Great movie palaces

Elk Rapids — Dan Packer, a volunteer at the Plymouth, Mich., museum, will address the Elk Rapids Historical Society.

Packer will give a PowerPoint presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, on the great movie palaces built in or near Detroit's Grand Circus Park. The program will be held at the Historical Museum, 301 Traverse St. A $5 donation per person is suggested. For details, visit http://elkrapidshistory.org.

Hagen Trio performs

Acme — The Tom Hagen Trio featuring Rick Reuthers will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at the Music House Museum, 7377 U.S. 31 North.

The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for students. Proceeds go toward the restoration of the 1922 "Amaryllis" Mortier dance hall organ. For details, call 938-9300 or visit musichouse.org.

State Park Rec 101

Traverse City — Crystal Bindi Dance Studio will sponsor a belly dancing workshop Saturday, July 21, as part of Michigan State Parks' Recreation 101 program.

"Belly Dancing 101" starts 10 a.m. at Keith Charters Traverse City State Park, 1132 U.S. 31 North. The workshop is free, but a State Park Recreation Passport is required for park entry.

PaleoJoe makes visit

Kalkaska — PaleoJoe will bring dinosaurs to life Saturday, July 21, at the Kalkaska County Library, 247 S. Cedar St.

The "Dinosaurs, Dragons and Dreams" program starts at 11 a.m. and is open to the public. Call the library, 258-9411, to learn more.

Acme reunion

Traverse City — All students who attended the little red brick school in Acme before 1954 are invited to a reunion and picnic. Paid reservations for the reunion are due Aug. 1.

The reunion will be held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Traverse City Elks Lodge, 625 Bay St. A 5 p.m. social hour will be followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $25 per person.

A picnic will start at noon Saturday, Sept. 8, at shelter #2 at Acme Township Park in Yuba. The cost is $3 per person. Hot dogs, brats, buns and condiments will be provided. Attendees should bring a dish to pass, their own beverages and table service.

Children's art fair

Traverse City — Budding young artists are invited to participate in the 10th annual Children's Art Fair.

Children in first through eighth grades can express their creativity and make money at the art fair from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Friday Night Live. Registration closes Tuesday, July 31, and a $5 registration fee is required.

Harcus signing

Buzz Harcus will be signing copies of his two latest books, "A Breath of Spring" and "Thou Shalt Not," at Sassy Sunflower in Bellaire Tuesday, July 17.

The store is at 120 N. Bridge St. The signing is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
