Concert features brass quintet

Traverse City — The Mel Larimer Concert on Sunday, Feb. 5, will feature the Interlochen Brass Quintet.

"Brassissimo Brass" will start at 4 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 6105 Center Road. The quintet will play music ranging from the Renaissance era to today.

Valentine formal for middle school

Traverse City — Students in grades six to eight are invited to a Valentine's Day formal Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA.

The event will be held 7-10 p.m. at the Y Main Facility, 3000 Racquet Club Dr. Admission is free for Y members, $8 for non-members. Donations for area food pantries will be accepted. Pictured student ID is required.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon

Traverse City — The community is invited to welcome the Year of the Dragon Monday, Feb. 6, at a Lantern Festival for Chinese New Year.

The event will be held from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. at the Open Space, Grandview Parkway at South Union Street. No-flame lanterns will be used and all ages are welcome.

Chocolate and champagne night

Beulah — Gourmet chocolate and Mawby champagne will be served at Darcy Library's ninth Chocolate Champagne Evening.

The event will start at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the library, 7238 Commercial St., with music by Amadhia, a silent auction, chocolate and champagne.

Tickets are $20 in advance; $25 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased at the library, the Benzie County Chamber of Commerce, Crystal Crate & Cargo in Beulah and The Bookstore in Frankfort. Proceeds benefit library programs and literary collection.

Narrative song writing workshop

Bellaire — ISLAND will sponsor a free workshop on the basics of narrative song writing for beginners.

The workshop will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Bellaire Area Historical Society, 202 N. Bridge St. Donations are appreciated.

Gourmet dinner and chamber music

Suttons Bay — "Wine and Roses" is the theme for the next performance in Chamber Music North's Arcturos Concert Series.

The event will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Black Star Farms, Revold Road, starting with a three-course dinner at 5:30 p.m. The meal is $30 per person.

The 7:30 p.m. concert features mezzo soprano Jayne Sleder, baritone Scott Sklba and pianist Donna Brunsma. Concert tickets are $25 each.

A wine prelude starts at 6:30 p.m. for patrons who wish to purchase a glass of wine before the concert.

Burlesque and music at InsideOut

Traverse City — Super Happy Funtime Burlesque and Miss Tess & the Bon Ton Parade will make appearances this month at InsideOut Gallery, 229 Garland St.

Super Happy Funtime Burlesque, a Michigan-based troupe, will give a Valentine show at 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. General admission is $20 in advance; $25 at the door. Reserved seating is $30 and VIP seats are $40.

Miss Tess and her band will play original songs, vintage jazz, blues, folk and country at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17. General admission is $15 in advance; $20 at the door. Reserved seats are $25 and VIP seating is $35.

Family fun, student art at Sweet Asylum

Traverse City — Sweet Asylum in the Village at Grand Traverse Commons will mark the opening of a Student Art Exhibit on Saturday, Feb. 4, with a Family Fun Day.

The Family Fun Day from noon to 4 p.m. will include a 1 p.m. demonstration of tops and spinners and a 2 p.m. reading of "Little Rhino Has No Horn." Sweet Asylum also will offer discounts.

The exhibit, on display through March 4 near Sweet Asylum, features art by Traverse City Area Public School students. Artists and their teachers will be on site during part of the afternoon.

MidEast: JustPeace shows documentary

Traverse City — MidEast: JustPeace will screen the film "Little Town of Bethlehem" on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Traverse Area District Library.

The documentary tells the story of three men, a Palestinian Muslim, a Palestinian Christian and an Israeli Jew, determined to end to violence in their lifetime. It will be shown at 6:30 p.m. at the library, 610 Woodmere Ave.

Noted costume designer visits OTP

Traverse City — Noted costume designer Mary Nemecek Peterson will conduct workshops, open to the public, at the Old Town Playhouse.

Peterson has been designing costumes for more than 30 years. She has worked in theater, dance, opera, network television, commercials and film.

"Creating Your Character and Doing More with Movement" meets 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 4. it is geared toward children ages 10 and older, who are encouraged to bring their own puppets to work with. There is no charge, but registration is required.

"Puppet Construction for Doctor Dolittle" continues 7-9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Feb. 5-6.

"From Picture to Pattern" will meet 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. The workshop for adults will focus on translating a sketch, photo or existing garment into a pattern. Registration is required and a $25 donation is suggested.

"Working in the Arts," a lecture and Q & A session, will start at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the MainStage Theatre. Peterson will discuss her work and her experiences. Tickets are $10 each.

Choral-Aires offer singing valentines

Traverse City — Quartets from the Central High School's a cappella ensemble the Choral-Aires will deliver singing valentines.

Delivery is available Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11-12, and Valentine's Day, Feb.14, to any location within 15 minutes of downtown Traverse City with advance reservations. The cost is $50.

St. Francis stages 'Guys and Dolls'

Traverse City — Tickets are on sale for St. Francis High School's production of the musical "Guys and Dolls."

Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 10-11 and Feb. 17-18, with matinees at 2 p.m. Sundays, Feb. 12 and 19. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students 18 and younger and senior citizens 65 and older.

Auditions for OTP Studio Theatre play

'Teleganza' concert benefits UpNorthTV

Traverse City — UpNorthTV, northwest lower Michigan's public-access television station will host three nights of live music at the City Opera House, 106 E. Front St.

The Teleganza Charity Concert will feature main acts each night from 7 to 10 p.m. March 1-3, interspersed by young singers and musicians competing in a Teen Talent Search.

Tickets for reserved table seating are $15 for adults; $10 for students. General admission is $12 adults; $6 students. Table and three-night packages are available at a discount. Proceeds support communication, education and outreach needs of area nonprofits.
