Northport 'goes to the dogs'

15th Dogs on Parade -- Kentucky Dogby-A Run for the Roses set for Saturday

NORTHPORT -- -- And they're off!

Dogs from across the region will enter the starting gate for a trot around town during the 15th annual Northport Dogs on Parade -- Kentucky Dogby-A Run for the Roses on Saturday.

"The town definitely goes to the dogs for the day," said parade organizer, David Chrobak, innkeeper at the Old Mill Pond Inn in Northport.

Chrobak, who envisioned the first dog parade after a visit to another canine event during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, said the event started out small but is now a summertime favorite.

"There were 20 or so dogs dressed up for the first parade with just a few people watching, not really knowing what was going on," said Chrobak, who hoped the event would help bring people into town for Northport's annual sidewalk sale days.

Last year more than 150 lavishly costumed dogs were included in the parade, with some 2,000 or so spectators gathered for the Indiana Bones and the Treasures of the Lost Bark themed outing.

"The costuming is phenomenal; people really go all out," said Chrobak, whose favorite parade themes have included The Treasures of King Mutt, Harry Dog Potter and Dog House of the August Moon.

As far as favorite costumes, Chrobak said there are just too many to mention, but nearly every one received an award.

"We make up categories as we do the judging, based on the costume -- like best use of balloons," said Chrobak, who will ride on the judge's float along with his newly adopted Jack Russell terrier, Bungy.

"She has rejected any form of costume, so for this year at least, it may just be a rose collar," Chrobak said.

The 15th annual Northport Dogs on Parade will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday in downtown Northport. Registration is $5 per dog in advance at The Dog and Cat Company, Dog Ears Bookstore or the Old Mill Pond Inn. Parade day registration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Mill Pond on Third Street. Judging is held prior to the parade at the registration site.
