Program on head injuries in kids

Traverse City — Emergency room physician Jill Burden, DO, will give a free program on preventing head injuries in children.

Burden will focus on helmet safety in the 6-7:30 p.m. program on Tuesday, Feb. 21. It will be held in room A and B at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. Registration is required. For details or to register, call 935-9265.

Ash Wednesday at Keswick church

Suttons Bay — Keswick United Methodist Church will start Lent with an Ash Wednesday service.

A potluck at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, will be followed by the service at 7 p.m. The church is at 3376 S. Center Highway. Call 271-3755 or 271-4117.

Grace Church marks the start of Lent

Traverse City — The Very Rev. Daniel P. Richards will administer ashes at services on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, at Grace Episcopal Church.

Services start at 7 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the church, 341 Washington St. Child care will be provided at the evening service and free parking is available behind the church. Call 947-2330 for details.

Lenten Luncheon Series begins

Traverse City — Church Women United will host Lenten luncheons starting Thursday, Feb. 23.

An 11:30 a.m. luncheon will be followed by music at noon and a Lenten message from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Thursdays during Lent at The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, 701 Westminster St. The Thursday, Feb. 23, luncheon will feature the Rev. Fred Milligan from The Presbyterian Church.

A $3 donation per person is suggested and will benefit local missions.

Family Partnership holds annual dinner

Traverse City — Family Partnership Grand Traverse will honor its families and volunteers at its Thursday, Feb. 23, annual dinner.

The faith-based nonprofit organization provides mentoring to low-income adults and families in the Traverse City/tri-county area.

The dinner will be held 6-7:30 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St. Central High School's Vocal Majority will perform and there will be testimonies from program participants.

Program on whole food nutrition

Traverse City — Registered dietitian Heather Campbell will give a free nutrition seminar on Thursday, Feb. 23.

The program will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Shoreline Center for Healing, 402 S. Union St.

Campbell will share steps to take to improve health by adding more whole food nutrition to the diet.

Fish dinners on Friday during Lent

Traverse City — The Immaculate Conception Men's Club will host fish dinners on Fridays during Lent.

The meals will feature baked cod and tilapia, side dishes and beverages. They will be served 5-7 p.m. Fridays, Feb. 24 through March 30, at Immaculate's Centennial Hall on Second Street.

The cost is $10 for adults, $7 for students and free for children 4 and younger. Proceeds benefit the Mother and Daughter Banquet.

Lenten Prayer Study at Grace Church

Traverse City — Members of all faith traditions are invited to explore and enhance their prayer life at a Lenten Prayer Study series at Grace Episcopal Church.

The series will meet 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturdays, Feb. 25, March 3, 17, 24 and 31, at the church, 341 Washington St. Each session will explore a different prayer tool.

Dinners include baked or fried fish

Acme — Fish dinners during Lent at Christ the King Parish will feature deep-fried wild pollock or baked fish with secret sauce.

The buffet meal will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Fridays during Lent, starting Feb. 24, at the church, 3801 Shore Road.

'Jazz D'Vine' will benefit GT Pavilions

Traverse City — "Jazz D'Vine" on Sunday, Feb. 26, will benefit the Grand Traverse Pavilions.

The fundraiser will be hosted from 2 to 4 p.m. at Chateau Chantal, 15900 Rue de Vine. It will feature live music by the Jeff Haas Trio, wine pours, cheese samples, and a tour of the wine cellar and wine-making process by a Chateau wine educator.

Tickets are $25 each and guests also receive a 50 percent discount on a second dinner that night at the Old Mission Tavern. Proceeds will be used to provide low-income adults with health care and residential services. For tickets or details, call 932-3027.

Compassionate Friends meet

Traverse City — Mickie Jannazzo, clinical services director for Third Level Crisis Intervention Center, will discuss humor and grief at the Monday, Feb. 27, meeting of the Compassionate Friends.

The meeting and program will start at 7 p.m. in conference room E at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. It is open to families grieving the death of a child of any age. Call 946-9306 for details.

Program on elder law and estates

Traverse City — The next program in the Successful Aging Series will focus on elder law and estate planning.

The program will start at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions off South Elmwood Avenue. Guest speakers will be local attorneys Deborah Rysso and Jeff Wingfield.

Seven-class 'Food for Life' series

Traverse City — The Food for Life Nutrition and Cooking classes developed by the Cancer Project will be offered in Traverse City.

Certified Instructor Sherry Davis will lead the classes, which will include cooking demonstrations. The series will focus on making the right food choices to help reduce the risk of developing cancer as well as overcome the disease after it is diagnosed.

Bethlehem Lutheran marks Lent

TRAVERSE CITY — Bethlehem Lutheran Church will begin its observation of Lent with a pancake dinner Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at the church, at the corner of Peninsula Drive and Garfield Ave. Family actiivites will follow.

There will be an Ash Wednesday service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22.

Every Wednesday during Lent (Feb. 29, March 7, 14, 21 and 28) there will be a soup and salad dinner at 6 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. Lenten service.

Ski/shoe tour benefits heart fund

TRAVERSE CITY — The Healthy Heart Benefit Tour is Sunday, Feb. 19. The tour is a benefit for the Munson Women's Heart Health Fund.

Skiers and snowshoers can register beginning at 1 p.m. at Timber Ridge Resort, 4050 Hammond Road. Entry fees are $20 per individual and $50 per family.

There will also be a raffle; rentals of skis and snowshoes are free for the first 25 people.
