Program will focus on sports injuries
TRAVERSE CITY -- Sports medicine specialist Jennifer Lyon, DO, will offer tips on avoiding sports injuries in a community presentation on Wednesday.
Dr. Lyon will discuss common sports injuries and practical steps that can be taken to avoid them. Her program will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in classroom A and B at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. There is no charge, but registration is requested. Manistee County debuts 211 system
MANISTEE -- The 2-1-1 Action Team and United Way of Manistee County will launch a new public communication system at a celebration on Feb. 11.
The system features a free, easy-to-remember telephone number (2-1-1) connecting people to community resources during times of everyday need and unexpected crisis. Calls are confidential and callers will receive help from certified specialists. The number also will be used during local disasters to help emergency management and health care personnel in distributing vital information.
Services available to Manistee County residents by calling 2-1-1 include basic human needs, physical and mental health resources, employment support, assistance for seniors and persons with disabilities, support for children, youth and families, township and public records, and volunteer and charitable giving opportunities.
By Lyon, longtime ambassador for 2-1-1, will make the ceremonial first call at 1 p.m. at the Manistee County Transportation Building (Dial-A-Ride). The public is invited.
Doctors with A Heart offer services
TRAVERSE CITY -- Needy people in northwest Michigan will have access to free dental care at a second session of "Doctors With A Heart."
Dr. Stephen Kozelko, Dr. Craig Fountain and Dr. Daniel Madion will be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 12 at their office, 13300 S. West Bay Shore Drive. Care will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with children receiving priority. This year, patients do not need a referral ticket.
Peter, Paul & Mary tribute benefits VSA
TRAVERSE CITY -- Veteran performers Jim Hawley, "Doc" Probes and Donna Lea Wilson will take listeners on a walk down memory lane at a tribute concert of songs by Peter, Paul & Mary.
"Jim, Doc and Donna: A Tribute to Peter, Paul & Mary" will debut at the annual VSA arts of Michigan/Grand Traverse Area fundraiser for people with disabilities. "H'arts and Arts for All" will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 13 at Left Foot Charley, 806 Red Drive in the Grand Traverse Commons. The Traverse City Central High School Choral-Aires also will perform.

Benefit concert for American Red Cross
MANISTEE -- May Erlewine, Seth Bernard, Joshua Davis, Rachael Davis, Dominic John and Mike Shimmin will give a benefit concert for the West Shore Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The "Red Heart" Concert will begin at 8 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Ramsdell Theater on Maple Street. Tickets are $25 each and include a dessert intermission.

Vasa events benefit women's health
TRAVERSE CITY -- A portion of each entry fee for the North American Vasa cross-country ski competition will benefit Munson Medical Center's Women's Cancer Fund. Proceeds of a new fundraiser in conjunction with the Vasa will benefit the Munson Women's Heart Health Fund.
The Vasa Festival of Races will be held Feb. 13 and 14. All races will begin and end at Timber Ridge Resort, 4050 Hammond Road. Registration and packet pick-up at the resort begins at noon on Feb. 12 and continues until 9 p.m. A pasta dinner will be served from 5 to 8 p.m. to benefit local youth Nordic programs. The new fundraiser features a ski tour starting at noon on Valentine's Day at Timber Ridge. Distances up to 16 kilometers will be available. Treats from the Chocolate Den, Chocolate Exotica and Benjamin Twiggs will be served on the course and music will be played at the start and finish areas and at food stops. An "Apres Ski" event from 2 to 4 p.m. will feature music by TC Celtic, food, refreshments, chocolate and awards.
The Valentine's Day fundraiser entry fee is $20 and all proceeds go to the Women's Heart Health Fund. Registration may be completed in advance at www.vasa.org or from noon to 1:30 p.m. the day of the event.
Get-together for single travelers
TRAVERSE CITY -- With leisure travel on the rise and traveling solo a growing trend, the Traverse City Senior Center and Travel Alliance will host a get-together for single travelers.
The event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 at the Cottage Cafe, 420 Munson Ave. Pat Thompson and Carol Sullivan will give a program on how to efficiently pack a suitcase and the event will offer a chance for single seniors who like to travel to meet other like-minded individuals, with the possibility of connecting with a traveling companion. Reservations are required.

Parkinson's group sponsors Webcast
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Area Parkinson's Support Group and Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) will sponsor a free virtual Webcast of the PAN 16th annual Public Policy Forum from Washington, D.C.
The forum is a day of education, advocacy and up-to-date information on treatment, research and a cure for Parkinson's disease. The Webcast will be shown from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Feb. 17 at Munson Community Health Center, rooms A and B, 550 Munson Ave. A cafeteria is available on-site.

Free tranquility harp workshop planned
TRAVERSE CITY -- Reservations are due Feb. 16 for a free tranquility harp workshop by Marilyn Wares.

Mardi Gras party
for diabetes charity
TRAVERSE CITY -- The public is invited to "let the good times roll" at a Mardi Gras benefit for the Ryan Dobry Diabetes Charity, which helps uninsured and underinsured patients with diabetes.
The party will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 19 at the Traverse City Elks Lodge, 625 Bay St. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.
Tickets are available at the door for $25 and a portion of the cost is tax deductible. Tickets include hors d'oeuvres, music and dancing. A cash bar will be available.
