More H1N1 walk-in clinics scheduled
TRAVERSE CITY -- Public health officials are concerned that a third wave of H1N1 flu will hit in the next several months and anyone who has not already received vaccination is urged to get vaccinated before this potential third wave occurs.
Because supplies of H1N1 vaccines are now ample, the Grand Traverse County Health Department is sponsoring another series of walk-in clinics for anyone needing the H1N1 vaccine. Clinics will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday and Feb. 5, 12 and 19 at the Health Department on Garfield Road; and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and Feb. 10 and 17 at the Public Services Building on LaFranier Road
'Go Red for Women' events in February
TRAVERSE CITY -- February has been designated American Heart Month by the American Heart Association. Munson Medical Center will promote a series of events to educate and raise awareness about heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women in America.
The month will kick off with a program by cardiologist Dino Recchia, MD, director of education for the Munson Heart Center and vice chairman of the Munson Department of Cardiology. The program, "Women and Heart Disease: Separating Fact from Fiction," will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Milliken Auditorium, Dennos Museum Center, 1701 E. Front St. Dr. Recchia will discuss the ways women show symptoms of heart disease with a focus on how women differ from men. Issues regarding both diagnosis and treatment will be reviewed. Admission is free and no registration is required.
National Wear Red Day is Feb. 5. All Munson Medical Center staff are encouraged to participate as a way to raise awareness about the fight against heart disease in women. Other businesses are invited to encourage employees to participate as well.

Smoking cessation classes offered
TRAVERSE CITY -- The American Lung Association will offer a smoking cessation class.
The "Freedom from Smoking" class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, plus Feb. 9, 16, 18 and 23, and March 2 and 9 at the United Way of Northwest Michigan, 521 S. Union St. Participants are expected to attend all classes. "Quit Night" is not scheduled until the Feb. 18 class and Pangea's Pizza will provide a free celebration dinner at the last class.

Glen Eagle will give H1N1 vaccinations
TRAVERSE CITY -- Glen Eagle Retirement Community will offer the H1N1 vaccine to the public on Feb. 4.
Vaccinations will be given from 9 a.m. to noon at Glen Eagle, 3950 Sumac Drive. The shots are free for anyone with Medicare Part B and $15 cash for everyone else. For details, call 935-4553.
Sale for Women's Resource Center
TRAVERSE CITY -- A bake sale on Feb. 5 will benefit the Women's Resource Center, the area's only domestic and sexual violence agency providing counseling, advocacy and housing for women and children in crisis.
The sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the WRC Thrift Shop, 3030 N. U.S. 31 South. Volunteer bakers will provide homemade pies, cakes, sticky buns, breads, muffins and cookies. The "Pie Lady" from The Eatery in Kingsley also will be on hand with her creations and will take advance custom orders.

Musical promotes healthy eating
TRAVERSE CITY -- A musical family performance will spotlight the importance of healthy eating in the fight against heart disease and obesity.
"The Jack Sprat Low-Fat World Tour" will be part of Family Day activities on Feb. 6 at the Dennos Museum Center, 1701 E. Front St. The interactive, 60-minute musical program will start at 11 a.m. Family Day art activities and gallery hunts will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Events encourage regular dental care
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse Health Clinic has partnered with the Garden Theater in Frankfort and the Great Lakes Children's Museum in Traverse City for events designed to help reinforce good oral health habits in children.
The Garden Theater will screen "Happy Feet" at 2 p.m. on Feb. 6. Admission is free and following the film, attendees will receive a "Tooth Care Kit" from the Traverse Health Clinic. Nurses and students invited to program
TRAVERSE CITY -- All nurses and student nurses are invited to the next meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan.
The group will meet for dinner and a program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. Professor, columnist and counseling psychologist Susan Odgers will discuss "Sexuality and Patient Care: The Role for Nurses."
A one-hour certificate of attendance will be awarded to those attending and pizza and salad will be available for $5. Registration is required.

Information session on nursing program
PETOSKEY -- North Central Michigan College will hold a series of informational sessions to explain the process for admission into the college's nursing program and prerequisite courses students must complete prior to entry into the program.
The first session will be held from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 in room 122 of the college's main administration/classroom building, 1515 Howard St. Additional sessions will be held at the same time and location on April 14, Sept. 15 and Nov. 10, 2010. Anyone planning to apply for acceptance into the program is strongly encouraged to attend one of these sessions.
