Benefit Saturday for cancer patient

INTERLOCHEN -- A benefit for Narda Adams will be held Saturday.

Adams has cancer and the proceeds of the pig roast and silent auction will go to help her and her son. There is also a fund set up in her name; contact any branch of Northwestern Bank for more information.

The fundraiser will be held at Golden Fellowship Hall, 9700 Riley Road, attached to the Interlochen Public Library, from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, call 649-1461.

Crockpots will help Maritime cadet

TRAVERSE CITY -- Great Lakes Maritime cadets will host a benefit "Crockpot Showdown" to raise money for Senior Cadet JD Burson, who recently was diagnosed with a rare cancerous brain tumor.

Burson's fellow cadets will create their best dishes using only a slow cooker starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at Left Foot Charley, the Village at Grand Traverse Commons. The public also is invited to bring their best crockpot creations. Judging will start at 5 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee for competitors.

A $10 donation will be collected at the door and there will be free wine samples and special prices on glasses of wine. All proceeds go directly to Burson's medical care.

'Look Good ... Feel Better' class offered

TRAVERSE CITY -- Area women undergoing cancer treatments are invited to a free class designed to help them feel better about their physical appearance.

"Look Good ... Feel Better" classes are offered by the American Cancer Society. Participants receive beauty advice and cosmetic application techniques from an experienced licensed cosmetologist, advice on hair and wig care and a free cosmetics kit. The next class will meet from 10:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Copper Ridge Boutique, off Silver Lake Road. Class size is limited. For details or to register, call Judy Blandin, 357-0379.

Program focus is medical marijuana

TRAVERSE CITY -- Representatives of the Traverse City Compassion Club will discuss medical marijuana at the next meeting of the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.

Art program for challenged adults

TRAVERSE CITY -- Andre's Place, an art program for adults living with physical, emotional and cognitive challenges, meets each Wednesday.

Individuals ages 18 and older are invited to experiment in various mediums in a safe, supportive and noncompetitive environment. Art supplies and instruction are provided.

Grand Bay Marine will host benefit

TRAVERSE CITY -- Grand Bay Marine will host a benefit Sunday to help defray medical expenses for JR McCormick, a co-worker who recently was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The event will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. at Auntie Pasta's, 2030 S. Airport Road. A donation of $7.50 for adults and $5 for children is requested and includes a spaghetti dinner, a non-alcoholic beverage and live music by Curbside from 5 to 8 p.m. There also will be a silent auction.

'Reading for the Health of It' series

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Munson Community Health Library's "Reading for the Health of It" series will feature a book discussion on Tuesday.

The discussion will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Health Library at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. Family medicine specialist Mary L. Louder, DO, will discuss Jo Ann Hattner's book "Gut Insight," which examines probiotics and prebiotics and how they can improve well-being and digestive health.

Transplant recipient will address Zonta

GAYLORD -- Liver transplant recipient Holly Werlein, of Traverse City, will speak at Tuesday's meeting of the Zonta Club of Gaylord.

Werlein received her transplant four years ago. She has made it her mission to promote awareness of organ transplants and the importance of organ donors.

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Sugar Bowl Restaurant. A business meeting will follow. The public is invited.

Grief support groups offered for adults

TRAVERSE CITY -- Hospice of Michigan will offer two grief support groups for adults.

"Living On: Loss of a Parent" is for adults who have lost a parent. The four meetings will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of April and May, starting Tuesday at the Hospice of Michigan office, 900 E. Front St.

"Journey Through Grief" is designed to provide insights and coping skills for adults suffering the loss of a loved one. The group begins meeting Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and will continue on Thursdays through May 20 at Grace Episcopal Church, 341 Washington St.

Tai Chi classes for those with arthritis

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Health Education Institute, a partnership between Northwestern Michigan College and Munson Medical Center, will offer two Tai Chi classes for arthritis sufferers starting Wednesday.

Participants who have learned several beginning sun-style Tai Chi movements will add six more moves at an advanced class that will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. A beginning Tai Chi class for those with arthritis and osteoporosis will meet from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Both classes meet through May 5 in classroom F at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave., and cost $49 each. They are taught by Nancy Deye, a certified Tai Chi instructor for arthritis. Call NMC, 995-1700, for details or to register for either class.

Miracle Ear holds free hearing clinic

KALKASKA -- Miracle Ear will sponsor a free hearing clinic April 15.

Free seminar on problem gambling

TRAVERSE CITY -- A free seminar on April 16 will address problem gambling and its prevention through education and treatment.

The seminar will meet from 9 a.m. to noon at Behavioral Health Services within the Munson Medical Center campus, 1105 Sixth St. Participants will learn about the signs and symptoms of problem and pathological gambling, cross addictions such as smoking and alcoholism and the effects of gambling on families and others. 'In Her Shoes' art exhibit at Studio 7

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Women's Resource Center will sponsor an exhibit on April 16 that will showcase art from survivors of sexual assault.

"In Her Shoes" will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. at Studio 7 Arts Gallery, 225 W. 14th St. Survivors have designed shoes in a way that tells the story of their survival and journey of healing. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Freedom from Smoking class

CHARLEVOIX -- Charlevoix Area Hospital and the American Lung Association will offer a "Freedom from Smoking" class.

Sit-n-Fit program for senior citizens

TRAVERSE CITY -- Nurse Practitioner Sharon Olson will offer a new "Be Well" program for area senior citizens.

"Sit-n-Fit" focuses on fun, strength, balance and improved biomechanics while sitting or standing with chair support. It will meet from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for six Tuesdays starting April 20 at Partners in Prevention, 13795 Seven Hills Road, suite D.

West Shore offers spring classes

MANISTEE -- West Shore Health Connection is offering a variety of fitness classes this spring.

Classes are free with Health Connection membership and are designed for a wide range of ages and abilities. West Shore Health Connection is located at 1293 E. Parkdale Ave. A variety of membership and payment options are available.

Apply for health care scholarships

GAYLORD -- Otsego Memorial Hospital Foundation will accept applications for healthcare scholarships through April 29.

The scholarships are open to students of all ages who live in the hospital's service area, primarily Atlanta, Elmira, Frederic, Gaylord, Johannesburg, Lewiston, Vanderbilt, Waters and Wolverine. They are targeted toward students who are currently enrolled in a healthcare related program, or healthcare workers wishing to further their education.
