Chickadee author

Traverse City — Bill O. Smith, author of "Chickadees at Night," will launch a "tongue-in-cheek" Chickadees for State Bird campaign at an appearance today, June 24, at Horizon Books, 243 E. Front St.

Smith will be at the book store from 2 to 4 p.m., with a recitation of the book at 3 p.m. He also will encourage visitors to sign his petition to make the chickadee Michigan's state bird.

Book launch

Leland — A book launch will be hosted Thursday, June 28, for a new book about Fishtown.

In "Fishtown: Leland, Michigan's Historic Fishery," author Laurie Kay Sommers tells Fishtown's story through the remembrances of commercial fishermen and ferry captains who have worked out of Fishtown since 1900.

The book launch will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Leelanau Books, 109 N. Main St. The book, published by Arbutus Press, is available in Fishtown and at Grand Traverse area book stores.

Paddling Michigan

Benzonia — The Benzonia Public Library and the Darcy Library in Beulah will sponsor an appearance on Friday, June 29, by Doc Fletcher, author of "Paddling Michigan's Hidden Beauty: The Rivers, The Towns, The Taverns."

The 6:30 p.m. program will take place at the "Barn" at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia. Fletcher will discuss rivers featured in the book, detailing canoeing and kayaking adventures across lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.
