Community walk celebrates sobriety
PETOSKEY -- In recognition of September as National Recovery Month, the White Feather Wellness Project will host a community walk Saturday to celebrate sobriety and recovery.
The 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. walk will start and end at Dave Kring's Chevrolet, 1861 U.S. 31. There also will be a program on recovery issues. There will be music by the Peacemeal String Band. The public is welcome.

Local Red Cross offers classes
TRAVERSE CITY -- The American Red Cross of Northwest Michigan will celebrate National Preparedness Month by offering several classes to close out September.
Disaster Services class will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. this Monday through Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 24.
Blood-borne Pathogens classes will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Sept. 29. The extra classes are designed to help daycare providers meet new requirements for licensing issued by the State of Michigan.
CPR & First Aid Instructor Certification class for the lay responder will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2. After completion of the three-day course, participants will be able to teach adult, child and infant CPR and first aid to lay rescuers.

'Together We Can' classes continue

Program on diabetes complications

Rare Disorders Support Group
TRAVERSE CITY -- One in 10 Americans has a rare disorder as an outcome of disease and/or injury and a new local support group for anyone with any rare disorder has been formed.
The group is facilitated by individuals and families who have successfully adjusted to living with rare conditions. It is designed to provide friendship, encouragement and guidance to others.

Tips on living alone after a spouse dies
TRAVERSE CITY -- Navigating through life after the loss of a spouse can be a challenge. A new series, "Learning to Live Alone," is designed to help individuals develop skills for this new chapter in their lives.
The five-week series will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 24 through Oct. 22, at Northwestern Michigan College's Oleson Center, room 112. Topics include "Creating A New Life," "Home and Maintenance Essentials," "Cooking for One," "Taking Care of Your Car" and "Health and Wellness." Sessions may be attended individually.

Life coach will give workshops in TC
TRAVERSE CITY -- International life coach, counselor and workshop leader Sandy Levey Lunden will give three workshops in Traverse City.
Lunden has more than 30 years of experience as a life coach and counselor. In 1990, she created the "Clearing Process," a technique designed to help individuals reshape behavior and thinking processes.
Lunden will present "The Power of Clearing" workshop Sept. 24 at the Peaceful Heart Center, 4148 Supply Road, and Sept. 26 at Higher Self Book Store, 328 E. Front St. It is designed to help participants relearn communication skills, release their negative past and live in the present in their "True Self."
Lunden also will lead the "True Woman's Power" course Sept. 27 at the Peaceful Heart Center. This course is designed to clear barriers to femininity, sexuality, spirituality and talent for a woman.

Lunch on the Run benefits cancer fund
TRAVERSE CITY -- Now in its third year, Lunch on the Run on Sept. 25 will benefit the Women's Cancer Fund at Munson Medical Center.
The community lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from both Bill Marsh car dealerships on South Garfield and the Hagerty Insurance headquarters on Cass Street. The meal includes a regular meat sandwich or a vegetarian option, chips an apple and bottled water.

Walk for junior diabetes research
TRAVERSE CITY -- More than 250 walkers are expected to participate in the Michigan Great Lakes West Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's annual Walk to Cure Diabetes.
The festivities will start on Sept. 25 with an 8 p.m. concert by Blind Dog Hank and line dancing led by Ryan Dobry at InsideOut Gallery, 229 Garland St.
The event will be held Sept. 26 and will start with registration at 8:30 a.m. at Sunset Park, next to the Holiday Inn on East Front Street. The walk will start at 10 a.m.

Concert to support midwife licensing
BENZONIA -- The Friends of Michigan Midwives will sponsor a fundraiser to support licensing for home-birth certified professional midwives.
The concert will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., rain or shine, on Sept. 27. It will include music by Miriam Pico, Tone Soup, Asley MacTavish, Old Foresters, Lake Effect, Kat Eldred and Michelle Chenard, plus belly dance performances by Pure and Dancers of the Rising Phoenix. There also will be an area with activities for children of all ages. The suggested donation is $10 per family.
To reach the venue, take U.S. 31 to Benzonia, turn east on Love Road for about one mile, then left on the track road and right on the next two-track road. Concert signs will be posted.
Writing workshop will explore healing
TRAVERSE CITY -- Grief counselor and life-story writer Kathryn Holl will lead a workshop that examines the power of writing as part of the healing process.
The workshop will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 26 at Northwestern Michigan College. Holl will guide participants as they explore different writing techniques for creating important memorial pieces.

Donate supplies to brighten kids' smiles
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Health Clinic's "Traverse Bay Give Kids a Smile Program" is asking the public to help them provide 4,000 local children with a new toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss.
Donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss may be dropped off through Oct. 14 at all Tom's Food Markets in Traverse City, Interlochen, Northport and Williamsburg. These toothcare kits will be given to students when the Health Clinic and volunteers visit local schools this school year.
Bike ride for Child Advocacy Center
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Tri-County Coalition for the Prevention of Child Abuse & Neglect is sponsoring a bike ride to benefit the establishment of a local Child Advocacy Center to meet the needs of abused children in Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Kalkaska counties.
The inaugural "Cycle for Solutions" will start at 9 a.m. Oct. 3 at Darrow Park, 1025 Bay St., between North Elmwood and Monroe streets. The cost is $25 per person or $35 per family. Participants may register at www.tccpcan.com or in person the day of the event.
