Flamenco troupe brings culture to TC

TRAVERSE CITY — Dancers, singers and musicians from Spain, France and the U.S. will perform in Traverse City Friday, April 13.

The Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Co. comes to town as part of its first national tour. The company has performed throughout the Middle East and Europe and spends summers in Santa Fe, N.M.

Flamenco music originated in Andalusia, Spain, in the 18th century, influenced by Gypsy traditions going back to India and even the Middle Ages. Musical styles have been blended over the centuries, including African, Arabic and Spanish guitar. During the Spanish Inquisition, groups of people incorporated their own despair and style into flamenco, helping make it what it is today.

Flamenco has been named a cultural treasure on UNESCO's Intangible Heritage List.

The Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Co. will perform at 8 p.m. in Milliken Auditorium on the main campus of Northwestern Michigan College, 1701 E. Front St. They'll perform a mixed repertory program, including "Encuentro," which was nominated for an Isadora Duncan Award in 2009. Juan Siddi is the principal dancer, choreographer and artistic director. The cast also includes singers Coral de los Reyes, guitarist Jose Valle and cellist Michael Kott, as well as an array of dancers.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $28 at the door, $22 for museum members, plus fees. Tickets are available by calling 995-1553 or online at www.dennosmuseum.org.
