Quilters hold meeting Feb. 2

CENTRAL LAKE -- The Chain of Lakes Quilters will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the Governmental Center in Central Lake. The program will be a member garage sale. GT Dems board meets Feb. 10

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse County Democratic executive board will hold its next monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Feb. 1.

The meeting will be held at the Michigan Education Association office, 1745 Barlow St. Bring non-perishable food items to donate to area food banks. All Democrats are invited to attend.

Family nights set at the YMCA

TRAVERSE CITY -- Bring your family to enjoy an evening of games and sports. Each event features all-you-can-eat pizza, beverages and treats. The programs are free for Y members; $15 per family for nonmembers.

The Feb. 5 and Feb. 19 events will feature a Valentine-theme called "Heart-to-Heart Family Time" and events will include: face painting, sports, guessing jars and gymnasiums.

The Feb. 5 event will be held at the main YMCA, 3000 Racquet Club Drive. The Feb. 19 event will be held at the new YMCA Child Care Center, 1100 Woodmere Suite B, and is programmed toward pre-schoolers and has a bounce house.

Republican Women host senator, judge

ELK RAPIDS -- The public is invited to lunch at noon on Monday, Feb. 8, at Siren Hall in Elk Rapids to hear Sen. Mike Bishop and Judge William C. Whitbeck, Michigan Court Of Appeals. Cost is $12 per person and includes lunch. Reservations are required by Friday, Feb. 5. Call or e-mail Maryanne Jorgensen at 632-2412 or mjorgensen.torchlake@charter.net. Payment will be accepted at the door for only those who have called to reserve a seat.

The program is sponsored by the Antrim County Republican Women (ACRW). The mission of the Antrim County Republican Women's Club is to bring issues and candidates to the electorate.

Society presents preservation program

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Peninsula Township Hall, 13235 Center Road. The program will be a presentation by Gordon Hayward on planning for historic preservation with Peninsula Township and other activities.

Hayward recently retired from his planning career, including a 21-year career as Peninsula Township planner. His program topics included: protecting the Boardman River, preserving shoreline and open spaces, transportation planning, and protecting land for agriculture.
