New night for Make a Memory workshop
TRAVERSE CITY -- Michael's Place, a healing center for grieving children, teens, adults and families, will hold its monthly Make A Memory workshop on a new night. The next workshop is tonight.
The workshop will meet from 4 to 8 p.m. at Michael's Place Family Support Center, 1055 Carriage Hill Drive, suite 4. Participants can work with volunteers to make memory pillows, stuffed animals, memory boxes and memory books to help them remember a loved one who died. They should bring a picture or piece of clothing for the project.
The workshop will continue to be offered on the third Thursday of each month. For details or to volunteer, call 947-6453.
Class offered for beginning runners
TRAVERSE CITY -- The 10th annual Running Fit "Run Again" class will start on Monday.
Lisa Taylor created and instructs the class. She is a Traverse City Track Club member and award-winning cross country coach at Traverse City Central High School. The focus is on running for health and fitness and the class is appropriate for all ages and abilities.
The beginner's running class will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays through May 24 at the Running Fit shoe store. The cost is $90; $75 each when signing up with a "buddy." Past participants may take the class for half price.

Parenting class for grandparents
GRAYLING -- The Grayling Senior Center will offer a program designed for grandparents who serve as primary caregivers for their grandchildren.
"Grandparents Raising Grandchildren ... Back On Duty" will be offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting Monday and continuing through May 24 at the Grayling Senior Center, 308 Lawndale. Jody Robson, Grace Center counselor, will present the "ScreamFree Parenting" series.

NMC hosts Hospice teleconference
TRAVERSE CITY -- Northwestern Michigan College will host Hospice Foundation of America's annual National Bereavement Teleconference.
"Living with Grief: Cancer and End-of-Life Care" will address cancer care options and loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional caregivers. It will be broadcast from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Oleson Center at NMC, 1701 E. Front St. Check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Area senior citizens invited to health fair
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Village at Bay Ridge will hold its third annual Senior Health Fair on Wednesday.
The fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Village at Bay Ridge, 3950 Scenic Ridge, off Silver Lake Road. Participants can have their blood pressure checked, experiment with ski walking, learn about nutrition and visit participating vendors.

Therapeutic harp class to be held
TRAVERSE CITY -- A free five-week therapeutic harp class will be offered for individuals living with a life-threatening illness.
The class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays, March 27 through April 24, at Partners in Prevention, 13795 Seven Hills Road. Participants will learn an ancient modal method of music and no music skills are needed. Folk harps will be available to participants for the class.

Training for Hospice volunteers to start
GRAYLING -- Mercy Hospice is looking for individuals to help with its growing hospice program and will offer volunteer training April 6 and 8.
Training will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the Mercy Hospice office, 324 Meadows Drive. Mercy Hospice covers services for Crawford, Roscommon and parts of Ogemaw, Otsego, Oscoda and Kalkaska counties. Registration is required by April 1. Mass features sign-language interpreter
ACME -- Christ the King Catholic Church now offers sign-language interpretation at Mass once a month.
Experienced American Sign Language interpreter Jackie Richer will interpret the prayers and teachings during the 11 a.m. Mass on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next sign-language interpreted Mass will be celebrated on March 28.
The Rev. Gerald Micketti, pastor at Christ the King, noted that the parish welcomes hearing-impaired worshipers any time, but especially on those Sundays when the sign-language interpreter is present. The church has personal sound amplification devices/head sets available prior to any Mass or other service upon request.

Advocacy Center offers new program
TRAVERSE CITY -- The new Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center of Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties is offering a program of interest to any youth-serving organizations and parents.
"Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children" is a prevention training program developed for youth organizations. The two-and-a-half hour program, conducted by specially trained facilitators, is designed to educate adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Training for groups as small as 10 can be arranged at area schools, places of business or at the Advocacy Center, 121 E. Front St., suite 301. There are four trained facilitators and most schedules can be accommodated. Free hearing screenings offered
TRAVERSE CITY -- Free hearing screenings will be offered at Walgreen Drug Stores, sponsored by Audicare.
The screenings start March 23; no appointment is necessary. For specific times, dates and locations, call 938-3111 or (800) 977-4327. The screenings are part of Diabetes Awareness Day.
