With spring arriving and animals moving around outdoors more, Ruth Steele Walker of Northport passed along this recipe from her vet, Tom Gremel of the Acme Veterinary Clinic.
"Home remedies abound, but many of them are ineffective and messy," Gremel said. He says this one works and it's made from inexpensive household ingredients.
Wear rubber gloves, he said, or you'll end up smelling like a skunk, Gremel said. Old clothes are recommended and sometimes the peroxide can temporarily bleach a black dog's hair.
Skunked Pet Smell Reducer
Mix equal parts hydrogen peroxide and baking soda plus a squirt of dish detergent into a paste.
Apply the paste to all the "perfumed" areas of your pet.
Work the shampoo into the hair and allow to it to remain for a while, then rinse.
