Gaylord Zonta hosts Wellness Workshop

GAYLORD -- The Zonta Club of Gaylord will hold a "Women's Wellness Workshop" as its first big fundraiser.

The event will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at Treetops Resort. Programs on anti-aging wellness, healthy living and lessons of the spine will be paired with Fit Yoga, health screenings and hands-on self defense. There also will be a buffet dinner and a program by Becky Mason, vice president of marketing at My Life Compass.

Tickets start at $25, with $5 upgrade options to visit the Treetops Spa Room or to have a BIA (Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis). For registration forms or details, e-mail info@gaylordzonta.org. Tickets also are available at the door.

Appointments being taken for health day

LAKE LEELANAU -- Uninsured and underinsured residents of Leelanau County are invited to make appointments for the Leelanau Free Health Day for Women and Men.

Screenings for women include a physical exam, lab tests, breast exam, Pap test and mammogram, which will be scheduled at a later day. Physical exams, lab tests, a prostate exam and PSA screenings are available for men. There also will be health and wellness booths offering information and massages.

Appointments are needed for the event, which will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. To register and for an appointment, call 256-0202. Those who make an appointment will be given directions to the site.

Drive hopes to find marrow donors

SUTTONS BAY -- A bone marrow registry drive is being held at Black Star Farms Saturday.

The drive is being organized by Nate Taylor, whose father, Charlie, has lymphatic leukemia. Charlie Taylor has been looking for a compatible donor since summer. The chances are better the more donors there are in the registry.

To that end, Saturday's drive seeks to add more people to the registry. Participants have to be between the ages of 18 and 60. A simple cheek swab is all that's needed; no needles. Organizers will send in the proper paperwork and take care of associated costs.

Meijer holds disease management events

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Meijer is one of the Meijer Supercenters that will offer monthly in-store programs on healthy living. The first program will focus on Celiac Disease.

The program will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and includes discussion, demonstrations, gluten-free samples and recipes, and healthy living tips. Consumers also will be able to interact with gluten-free food representatives at various solution stations in the store and receive information and coupons for gluten-free products.

Upcoming program topics include diabetes in November, weight management in January and heart disease in February.

Award-winning film shorts to be shown

TRAVERSE CITY -- In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Women's Resource Center will host a free screening of award-winning short films from around the world, all with a domestic violence awareness theme.

The program features the best films from the first two years of the "Speak Out Against Domestic Violence Short Film Competition," hosted by Avon Products International and Expresion En Corto International Film Festival in Mexico. The collection lasts about 90 minutes. One of the shorts, "I Slept with Cookie Monster," was featured at the 2009 Traverse City Film Festival.

The films will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St. A reception will follow. Admission is free and the public is invited. For details, call 941-1210.

Give blood and get a homemade treat

TRAVERSE CITY -- Glen Eagle Retirement Community in conjunction with the American Red Cross will host a blood drive on Wednesday.

The theme is "Trick or Treat-Give Blood, Get Something Good to Eat." Donors who give blood between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the retirement community, 3950 Sumac Dr., will be treated to homemade refreshments. For details, call 935-4553.

GT Pavilions will offer water classes

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Aquatic/Wellness Center at the Grand Traverse Pavilions will offer a Water Readiness Class for children ages 6 months to 3 years and has openings in a relaxed aquatic class for people of all ages with arthritis or fibromyalgia and in an advanced aquatic aerobics class.

The water readiness classes will meet at 10 a.m. Saturdays, Oct. 31 through Nov. 21. The classes are not swimming lessons and parents are expected to be in the water with their children and be responsible for them. The cost is $40 and payment is expected when registering.

The arthritis class is designed to maintain and increase joint flexibility and muscular strength, improve balance and coordination and help with pain management. The five-week class meets from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Fridays. The fee for 10 classes is $90.

There also are openings from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in an "Hour of Power" class. The class is for adults of all ages looking for an advanced aquatic aerobic workout. The cost for 10 classes is $90.

Dental center offers cash for candy

CHARLEVOIX -- Dr. Michael Sullivan is leading an anti-cavity movement this Halloween by giving away dollars and a special prize in exchange for Halloween treats.

"Kids can still have all of the fun of trick-or-treating, but now their piggy banks will get a boost as well," Dr. Sullivan said.

Trick-or-treaters can bring their excess candy to Beacon Dental Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 1 and receive $1 per pound of unopened candy. The candy then will be shipped to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude. For details, call 547-9141 or visit www.beacondentalcenter.com.

Lecture on heart rhythm disorders

TRAVERSE CITY -- The next Munson Healthcare Cardiac Lecture will focus on common heart rhythm disorders.

Cardiologist Dino Recchia, MD, will discuss commonly seen heart rhythm problems, how they are diagnosed and treatments from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2. The free program will be held in rooms 1 through 3 of the basement-level conference center at Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St.

Chiropractic clinic offers free exam

TRAVERSE CITY -- Dr. Tony Aboudib, doctor of chiropractic and owner of Advanced Chiropractic & Wellness will offer free exams and two X-rays to celebrate the opening of his practice in Traverse City.

Planning begins for 2010 cancer relay

BENZONIA -- The 2009 Benzie County Relay for Life was a success and planning is under way for 2010.

The final figures from the August event show that the 13 teams participating in this year's relay raised $45,912. Fifty cancer survivors took part in the survivor walk and 722 luminaries honored cancer survivors and those who have died from the disease.

Teams are already planning for next year's event, which will take place on the second weekend in August at the Elberta Waterfront Park, and adding teams is a high priority. The Relay for Life Planning Committee is especially interested in recruiting teams of young people from Benzie County schools. Union/Yoga training programs licensed

LAKE LEELANAU -- Union/Yoga LLC's 200 hour and 500 hour master level teacher training certification programs are now licensed by the State of Michigan.

Union/Yoga met all the curricular, site inspection, administrative and fee requirements to obtain state licensing.

The curriculum also is registered and approved by Yoga Alliance®, a nonprofit, tax-exempt section 501(c)(3) organization.

Union/Yoga will offer two, 28-day, 200 hour level teacher training certification programs in 2010: Jan. 31 through Feb. 27 and April 25 to May 22. It also offers a 500-hour Master Level Teacher Training Certification Program in one to 10 day increments throughout the year.
