Collection of prescription meds

TRAVERSE CITY -- A free collection for unused and expired prescription medications will be held Friday.

The Operation Medicine Cabinet(TM) prescription medication collection will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the west entrance of the Holiday Inn, 615 E. Front St. It is sponsored by the northern Michigan office of Home Instead Senior Care.

Collection co-sponsors are the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Department, Traverse City Police Department, the Prescription Shop, Life Story Funeral Home, Great Lakes Pet Memorial and Cremation and the Traverse City Holiday Inn. During the collection, Grand Traverse Resource Recovery Department will provide support to local law enforcement.

Film and discussion on drug abuse

TRAVERSE CITY -- The State Theatre will be the site of an evening of film and conversation about opiate and prescription drug abuse, overdose risk and creative responses.

The free event will begin at about 6 p.m. on Monday at the theater, 233 E. Front St. Featured films include "One Woman's Story," "Project Lazarus" and "Worth Saving." Award-winning video clips made by local students in a contest sponsored by Northern Michigan Substance Abuse Services will supplement the documentaries.

Discussion panelists are Fred Wells Brason II, CEO Project Lazarus and chaplain; Maya Doe-Simkins, overdose prevention specialist; Richard Entz, MD, Med Director, and Barbara Fasula-Emmott, both of Munson Behavioral Health; W. Morrone, DO, deputy medical examiner, Bay County, and addiction specialist; and doctor's wife and mother Stacy, RDA. The panel will be moderated by Pam Lynch, national overdose trainer.

Workshop on grief and the holidays

Grayling -- Anyone who has lost a loved one is invited to a "Holiday Grief Workshop" sponsored by Mercy Hospice and Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home.

The workshop will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Grayling Senior Center, 308 Lawndale. Participants can share feelings and thoughts and receive ideas on coping during the holiday season.

Up North 2 airs Parkinson's program

TRAVERSE CITY -- A program on "Strategies for Living with Parkinson's Disease," presented at the Parkinson's Summer Forum by John C. Morgan, MD, will be shown on Up North 2.

The program will air at 10 a.m. on Nov. 12, 19 and 26; and at 5 p.m. Nov. 16 and 23. It is sponsored by the Grand Traverse Area Parkinson's Support Group, which meets monthly.

Mother/baby support group not meeting

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Mother and Baby Support Group that meets at Munson Community Health Center has been canceled temporarily.

The group, which meets from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Mondays, will resume meeting when visitor restrictions due to H1N1 virus activity are lifted. For details, call 935-2591.

Workshop on 'The Art of Condolence'

TRAVERSE CITY -- Kathryn Holl, LPC, grief support/Hospice of Michigan, and nurse herbalist Anne Hughes, FNP, will lead a workshop on how to reach out to families and friends in time of loss.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Nov. 14 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Grand Traverse, 6726 Center Road. It will focus on what to say and gestures to offer at times of loss.

Local pediatrician discusses parenting

TRAVERSE CITY -- Mothers in Christ, a group of mothers from all five area Catholic parishes, will sponsor a program by local pediatrician Meg Meeker, MD.

Dr. Meeker has spent the past 20 years practicing pediatric and adolescent medicine and counseling teens and parents. She is a popular speaker on teen issues and has written a number of books, including "Epidemic: How Teen Sex Is Killing Our Kids," "Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters" and "Boys Should Be Boys: 7 Secrets to Raising Healthy Sons."

Free tranquility harp workshop offered

TRAVERSE CITY -- Marilyn Wares will offer a free workshop to allow the public to experience the tranquility harp.

The workshop will meet at 6 p.m. on Nov. 23 at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. No musical experience is needed and harps will be provided.

Seminar helps with senior care issues

TRAVERSE CITY -- Reservations are required for a Nov. 19 senior care seminar presented by Lighthouse Senior Advisors, a local senior advocacy group.

The seminar will focus on local care options, cost and planning, housing options, Medicare and Medicaid, durable power of attorney, advance directives and long-term care insurance.

Registered nurses meeting Nov. 12

TRAVERSE CITY -- Registration is required for the next meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan, scheduled for Nov. 12.

The meeting will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Scott's Harbor Grill, 12917 S. West Bayshore Drive. Cynthia Nichols, of the Munson Sleep Disorders Clinic, will speak and a one-hour certificate of attendance will be given out to those attending the entire lecture and completing an evaluation.

Dental lab is holding food drive

TRAVERSE CITY -- The D.H. Baker Dental Laboratory is celebrating its anniversary by holding a food drive this month and next.

Food can be dropped off at the lab on Aero Park Drive. Dentists who donate a bag of nonperishable food will receive a discount on lab services. Drivers from the lab will pick up food at dental offices and deliver it to local food pantries.

Dietitian speaking at gluten-free group

TRAVERSE CITY -- Dietitian Laura McCain, a chef and dietary adviser, will be the speaker at the Monday meeting of the Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in rooms A&B; of the Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. There will be an informal Q&A; at 6:30 p.m. for new members.

McCain will talk about the importance of vitamin D and immunity-boosting foods as well as the latest gluten-free trends and baking.
