Aging commission appoints Zerafa
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging has appointed Shirley Zerafa to its board. The group also elected its 2010 officers.
Zerafa was a teacher for 38 years and has served in various government and nonprofit agencies, including 10 years as a family counselor.
Officers for the coming year are Mary Andrews, chair; James Pascoe, vice-chair; James McGee, treasurer; and Steve Chapman, secretary. They will assume their roles Jan. 1.

Red Cross holding flu seminars
TRAVERSE CITY -- Red Cross information seminars about the H1N1 flu are being scheduled.
A community seminar will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Red Cross office, 735 S. Garfield Ave., Suite B100. Subsequent seminars are scheduled for Nov. 19 and 23, 7-9 p.m., at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.
Business and workplace seminars are scheduled for Dec. 2, 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., at the civic center.

Pavlova holding Father Fred benefit

Women's conference is Friday at NMC
TRAVERSE CITY -- A one-day conference for women is being offered Friday.
"Reinventing the Rest of Your Life" will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northwestern Michigan College. The day will look at "the next chapters of your life," and will feature speakers, guided reflection, resource booths, networking and food.

Dietitian helps with grocery shopping
TRAVERSE CITY -- A Munson dietitian will conduct a grocery store tour for diabetics.
Patti Hennrick will offer a view of grocery aisles and healthy eating during the diabetes-focused tour from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday at Tom's Food Market on East Bay.
Participants will learn how to read food labels, select food items and improve their blood sugar control. They will also learn about carbohydrate counting and meal planning to take control of their diabetes.

'Cruise' event raises funds for cancer
TRAVERSE CITY -- "Cruising for a Cure" will be held Saturday at Glen Eagle Retirement Community.
The fundraiser for the American Cancer Society features a cruise-themed reception, music by Chico and The Other Band, refreshments and games between 3 and 5 p.m. There will be a chance to win a Caribbean cruise.

Health department 'kicks butts'
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse County Health Department, as a member of the Traverse Bay Area Tobacco Coalition, is recognizing November as "Kick Butts Month."
During the month, health officials are encouraging a tobacco-free lifestyle to reduce the risk of preventable deaths. According to a 2006 survey, about 22 percent of Michigan adults are smokers.

Otsego hospital awarded book grant
GAYLORD -- Otsego Memorial Hospital has received a $1,500 grant from the Great Lakes Energy People Fund to buy books.
The books will be used as part of the hospital's Reach Out and Read program. Every child, 6 months to 5 years old, who comes in for a wellness visit will take home a book. About 700 books are handed out each year.

TRAVERSE CITY -- A seminar on anxiety disorders in children and adolescents will be held Tuesday.

New lodge designed specifically for men
TRAVERSE CITY -- Cherry Hill Haven has opened a residential care center with the decor of a hunting and fishing lodge.
The center, at 4885 N. Long Lake Road, cares exclusively for men with Alzheimer's and related dementia.
The lodge, "like deer camp, except very tidy," has a great-outdoors interior and warm furnishings, but still features round-the-clock care. Owners Patti and Tom Dixon plan on installing a putting green in the spring.
Cherry Hill Haven serves 46 residents in four facilities. A women's facility in a remodeled Victorian home is expected to open in the spring. Cherry Hill's philosophy is to please God and take care of his people. The facility will receive the Excellence in Care award from the Alzheimer's Foundation of America this year -- the only such facility in Michigan, Ohio or Indiana and one of 14 in the nation.

FRANKFORT -- The Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary will hold its Holiday Charity Ball Dec. 5.
The event, to be held at Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa in Thompsonville, begins at 5 p.m. There will be appetizers and wine, a silent auction and a raffle. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. with a live auction and dancing to the Clearwater Band to follow.

Cardiac rehab cooking class is free
TRAVERSE CITY -- A class on healthy cooking for a cardiac rehab diet is scheduled for Nov. 18.
Participants will learn healthy cooking techniques for reducing fat, what foods to look for at the grocery store, how to plan a menu and how to organize a kitchen.

New session of NIA is beginning Nov. 24
TRAVERSE CITY -- A new session of NIA classes begins Nov. 24 in Munson Community Health Center's Classroom D.
NIA mixes martial arts, dance and healing arts and was founded in San Francisco 20 years go. It promotes healthy joints and balance and increases strength, flexibility and circulation.

TC woman honored for volunteering
TRAVERSE CITY -- Catherine Dancer has been honored by Hospice of Michigan for her volunteer work.
Dancer, of Traverse City, regularly visits patients in facilities or in their homes. She said she was inspired to volunteer after a family member became ill.
"There is such a need for people who are willing to be a friend to someone at a very challenging, often frightening time in life," Dancer said.
