The following have been named Students of the Month by the Traverse City Kiwanis Club.
-- Jennifer Shanahan of Chicago is a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy and daughter of Regina Harders. She has served as Constitution Committee Head of the Student Senate, and on the Environmental Committee and the Amnesty International Club. Most of the activities Jennifer participates in center around music, such as band, orchestra, chamber groups, concerts and recitals, as a music theory tutor and flute teacher. She has also served as a freshman mentor with Welcome Wagon, and spent summers tutoring special needs children in music. She has earned honors including Oustanding Performance in Spanish and mathematics, Junior Honor Guard, and Dean's High Honors with Distinction. Jennifer enjoys listening to music, reading, watching movies, cooking and baking, and knitting. She hopes to attend a top-level conservatory and pursue a career as an orchestral flutist.
-- Matthew Park of Fife Lake, a senior at Forest Area Schools, is the son of Danny and Nancy Park. He has served as vice president of the National Technical Honor Society and on Prom Committee. He has participated in football (offensive and defensive tackle), basketball (center) and track. He earned second place in a Ferris State University welding competition. He enjoys hunting, fishing and outdoor activities, woodworking and welding. Matthew plans to attend Ferris State University's Welding Engineering Technology course.
-- Andrew Bahle of Suttons Bay, a senior at Interlochen Arts Academy, is the son of Robert and Joyce Bahle. He has participated in the Astro-Physics Club, the Amnesty International Club, the Old Town Playhouse pit orchestra and as a music theory tutor. A percussion major, he was recently designated as the Avedis Zildjian Company Endowed Scholar for 2009-10 at IAA. In 2007, Andrew was named an Emerson Scholar, a merit-based scholarship awarded to 52 of the nation's top high school musicians to attend Interlochen Arts Camp. Other honors include acceptance into the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar 2008; winner of the Grand Traverse Musicale's Gold Medal Scholarship; Honorable Mention in the Traverse Symphony Orchestra concerto competition; and many academic honors. Andrew is a member of the Sun Radius Steel Pan Band, the Interlochen Percussion Ensemble, and the IAA Orchestra. He enjoys reading and writing, cooking, and all kinds of music. He plans to pursue academics and music at a university next fall.
