Monthly study group offered at CMH

Former Fr. Fred volunteers honored
TRAVERSE CITY -- Father Fred Foundation officials recently honored former volunteers and supporters by dedicating trees around the newly landscaped facility at 826 Hastings St.
The ceremony honored William Maxbauer, Hattie Arnold, John Pearson, Bill Steffes, Mike Debelack and Walter Preiss. Alice Mugerian was honored at an event in June.
Workplace smoking regulation in effect
LAKE LEELANAU -- The Benzie-Leelanu District Health Department's Clean Indoor Air Regulation went into effect Nov. 16.
The regulation provides for smokefree workplaces and public places in both counties, not including bars and restaurants, most private residences, tobacco specialty stores or casinos.

Sign up teams for women's basketball
TRAVERSE CITY -- Winter women's baketball leagues are being formed at the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA.
Games will played Sunday evenings beginning Dec. 6, in a round-robin format. Women are encouraged to form their own teams. Registration is $400 per team plus $30 per player; download a form at www.gtbayymca.org.

GT Pavilions hosts Medicare meetings
TRAVERSE CITY -- The Grand Traverse Pavilions will host two free informational meetings on the changes in Medicare for 2010, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Conference Room A.
Fred Goldenberg, a certified senior adviser, will lead the discussion. The annual Medicare enrollment period is from Nov. 15 to Dec. 31. Any changes to Medicare plans must be made during this period.

Today is the Great American Smokeout
TRAVERSE CITY -- Today is the Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
The day is built around the premise that if smokers can try to quit for one day, maybe they can quit for longer.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the adult smoking rate in 2008 was essentially unchanged from 2004. About 20 percent of American adults smoke.

Lupus support group is forming
TRAVERSE CITY -- A new support group for lupus and other autoimmune disorders is forming.
The first meeting of the Lupus Alliance of America's Traverse City support group is scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday.
The group will discuss natural treatments for autoimmune disorders. Dustin Murphy of Murphy Chiropractic in Traverse City will lead the discussion.

Treatment foster care families needed
TRAVERSE CITY -- Families are needed for treatment foster care for children and youth through age 18.
Treatment foster care families provide care for one child in their home, teach social skills and coach birth parents. Reimbursement, support and training is provided by Child and Family Services and other community resources.
