Elizabeth Ammond of Traverse City was honored by the Michigan Fitness Foundation at the third annual Governor's Fitness Awards in Lansing for her pursuit of a healthier, more physically active lifestyle.
Ammond is among four Charles T. Kuntzleman Award winners who have overcome great challenges in efforts to add physical activity as part of their daily routines.
Ammond visited her doctor three and a half years ago in hopes he would recommend weight loss surgery. Instead he prescribed a weight loss program that focused on exercise, proper nutrition and group support. Today, 90 pounds lighter, Ammond tries to exercise six or seven days a week, encourages her husband and daughters to be active and has participated in numerous running and biking events. She now is training for her first half-marathon and is a tennis doubles champion at the Grand Traverse Resort. She will compete in the state championship in spring 2010.
