Program on ALS respiratory issues

TRAVERSE CITY — The ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/Lou Gehrig's Disease) Association, Airway Oxygen Inc. and Philips Respironics will sponsor a free educations program on respiratory issues commonly seen with ALS patients.

Mark Orlikowski, branch manager of Airway Oxygen, and Daryle S. Sawyer, respiratory sales specialist with Philips Home Healthcare Solutions, will be the guest speakers from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, in classrooms A and B at Munson Community Health Center, 550 Munson Ave. There is no charge and family and friends are encouraged to attend.

Walkers sought for Liver Life Walk

TRAVERSE CITY — The American Liver Foundation and Digestive Health Associations of Northern Michigan are looking for walkers to participate in the inaugural Liver Life Walk Traverse City.

The event will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, at Wuerfel Park, the home of the Traverse City Beach Bums, 333 Stadium Dr. Registration starts at 3:30 p.m. for the 4 p.m. walk. All participants receive a complimentary ticket to the Beach Bums' game that starts at 7:05 p.m.

Hospice needs lap throws and blankets

GRAYLING — Groups looking for a project might want to consider Mercy Hospice & Palliative Care.

Mercy Hospice provides care for the terminally ill and their families in nine counties of northern Michigan. They are in need of lap blankets and throws for homebound, wheelchair bound patients both at home and in nursing homes.

Sports physicals available in Gaylord

GAYLORD — Sports physicals for middle and high school athletes will be held Tuesday, Aug. 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Professional Medical Building at Otsego Memorial Hospital.

Each student must have a parent or legal guardian in attendance and a completed medical history sheet. Cost is $15. For more information, call (989) 731-6675.

Brunch, artist at Grayling center

GRAYLING — Sunday brunch at the Grayling Senior Center will be held Sunday, Aug. 1.

The menu includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, fruit salad, beverages and more. Suggested donation is $2.50.

There will also be a "meet the artist" reception at the senior center, 308 Lawndale St., beginning at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5. Kim Diment will showcase her photography and paintings of the AuSable. Reservations can be made by calling (989) 348-7123.

Long-term care seminar planned

TRAVERSE CITY — A seminar about long-term care will be held Monday, Aug. 2.

Genworth, a long-term care insurer, will give the talk in the lower level of WLJN, 1101 Cass St., beginning at 7 p.m. Topics will include changes to the laws as they relate to long-term care, Medicare and supplements, Medicaid and health plans.
