TRAVERSE CITY — The 2013 Martin Luther King, Jr. remembrance day event Monday, Jan. 21, will feature a live performance from the Brazeal Dennard Chorale. Based in Detroit, the award-winning ensemble is one of the oldest African-American choral organizations in the U.S.
This free, ticketed event will take place at the State Theatre at 5:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Traverse City Human Rights Commission, the State Theatre and Building Bridges with Music, the event will also feature performances by members of the Northwestern Michigan College Children's Choir and the Kingsley High School Concert Choir. Four Traverse City West High School students will emcee and read excerpts from MLK speeches and orations.
Directed by Dr. Augustus Hill, the Brazeal Dennard Chorale recently won gold and silver medals at the 2012 World Choir Games, which took place this past summer in Cincinnati. The international event brought choral groups from across the globe to compete in 23 music categories. The Brazeal Dennard Chorale won a gold medal in the spiritual music competition and a silver medal in the mixed chamber music category.
Other free MLK Day events at the State Theatre Monday include a 9 a.m. screening of "To Kill a Mockingbird," live coverage of the inauguration of President Barack Obama at 11:30 a.m. and a showing of "Middle of Nowhere" at 8:30 p.m.
"Middle of Nowhere" director Anna DuVernay made history this year by becoming the first African American woman to win the Sundance Film Festival award for Best Director. Rated R, the film tells the story of a bright medical student who puts aside her dreams to help her husband with his legal and personal struggles during an eight-year prison term.
