Preventing falls, fire
Traverse City — Meredith Hawes, safety officer with the Grand Traverse Metro Fire Department, will discuss fall prevention and fire safety on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Village at Bay Ridge.
The seminar will be presented at 11 a.m. in the East Building and at 1 p.m. in the West Building, 3850 Scenic Ridge. The public is welcome; call 932-9455.

Benzie County — Area residents can enjoy a meal out and help Benzie Area Christian Neighbors on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
The Mayfair Tavern in Elberta and the Coldcreek Inn on Main Street in Beulah will donate a portion of each meal receipt on Tuesday to the Benzie County food and clothing pantry.
Traverse City — The next meeting of the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging will start at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the commission office, 520 W. Front St., suite B. For details, call 922-4688.
Elberta — The annual "Shiver by the River & Winter Events Fundraiser" will be hosted at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, by the Mayfair Tavern, 515 Frankfort Ave.
A $10 entrance fee includes a buffet and silent auction. Profits will fund Frankfort-Elberta Area Chamber of Commerce winter activities.
Items for the silent auction may be dropped off at the chamber office, 517 Main St., before Tuesday, Feb. 5; or call Joanne Bartley, 352-7251.
Traverse City — The public is invited to preview and vote for the best room in the "DreamRoom Classic" at Golden-Fowler Home Furnishings, 1137 S. Garfield Ave.
Five local celebrities will create the room of their dreams using their favorite music as the theme and inspiration. The public can preview and vote on the best room Saturday, Feb. 9, through Friday, Feb. 15, at Golden-Fowler. Votes will be cast in the form of chips worth $1 each, with all proceeds going to Child and Family Services.

Traverse City — Kathleen Madigan returns to the City Opera House with her "Gone Madigan Tour."
Madigan was a finalist in season two of NBC's "Last Comic Standing" and a judge on season five. She has also won the American Comedy Award for "Best Female Comedian" and the Phyllis Diller Award for "Best Female Comedian."

The Traverse City Lions Club donated $200 to Cherryland Humane Society in memory of a longtime member.
Salvatore Falsette, 69, recently died of cancer. He loved animals and volunteered often at the Humane Society.
Falsette owned Low Vision Solutions in Traverse City with his wife, Nancy Simmons. The business sells products to the blind and visually impaired.
