Yoga Roots host kirtan ensemble

PETOSKEY -- The Prema Rupa Kirtan Ensemble will perform July 8 at Yoga Roots.

The Phoenix ensemble is part of a growing movement that employs East Indian melodic and rhythmic traditions for group singing designed to encourage rhythmic breathing, balance and equanimity. Kirtan participants typically sing together, or in "call and response" fashion, where a chant leader sings out the lines with participants singing back the same lines together. A good voice is not essential and singing is not even essential to derive the benefits. Listening attentively to the music may also uplift and inspire the listener.

The kirtan event will begin at 8 p.m. at Yoga Roots, 413 Howard St. Tickets are $20 in advance at the Grain Train, 347-2381, Petoskey; and Song of the Morning, (989) 983-4107, Vanderbilt. Tickets at the door are $25.
