Gluten-free group hosts guest speaker

TRAVERSE CITY -- Laura McCain, graduate chef and dietary advisor for the Traverse Area Gluten Free Support Group, will be the guest speaker at today's meeting of the support group.

McCain will give advice on preparing gluten-free meals and baked goods and suggest ways to make these items healthier. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass St.

Live Webcast for Parkinson's disease

TRAVERSE CITY -- The third installment of the "Parkinson's Science: Innovations and New Perspectives" Webcast will take place Saturday.

The Webcast will focus on the newest surgical advances available to treat Parkinson's disease including deep brain stimulation. It is offered by the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.

Aging commission holds flu shot clinic

Gaylord -- The Otsego County Commission on Aging is taking appointments for its annual flu shot clinic.

Flu shots will be administered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday by appointment at the Gaylord meal site at the Alten Zimmer Apartments, 120 Grandview Blvd. The clinic is open to adults ages 65 and older and their caregivers. There is no charge for those receiving Medicare benefits. The cost is $25 for all others.

Registered Nurses Association meeting

TRAVERSE CITY -- Registered nurse Jane Dinnen will discuss advanced directives at the next meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan (RN-AIM).

All members and non-member registered nurses or RN students are welcome. The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Area Agency on Aging, 1609 Park Drive, north of Art Van Furniture.

Brain Injury support group open house

TRAVERSE CITY -- Munson Medical Center's Memory and Attention Training Center will sponsor a Brain Injury Support Group Harvest Open House on Tuesday.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the center, 5123 N. Royal Dr., for area residents who have suffered a brain injury and their families. Participants will be able to meet with staff at the center and provide information on the type of support that is most important to them and their families. A light dinner will be served.

'Paint the Town Pink' walk planned

MANISTEE -- An inaugural "Paint the Town Pink" will be held to draw attention to October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event will be held on Oct. 16 starting with registration at 4 p.m. at Cornerstone Park across from the city marina. The walk will begin at 5 p.m. The one-mile route is on the Riverwalk and business district sidewalks. Registration forms are available at downtown businesses or by calling 887-4066 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Public invited to annual Wellness Day

FRANKFORT -- Learning to cook something tasty and healthy will headline Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital's 12th annual Fall Wellness Day.

Wellness Day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 18 at the hospital. There will be cooking demonstrations, recipes and tips on preparing nutritious meals, plus demonstrations showing the health difference between various cooking oils, as well as how to save money at the grocery store. There also will be free health screenings, healing touch massages and information on smoking cessation, advance directives, gift of life, prostate cancer and other health issues.

Seminar focuses on coping with grief

TRAVERSE CITY -- Munson Hospice and Palliative Care will sponsor a seminar designed to help people understand the grieving process.

"All About Grief" will be offered from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Traverse Area District Library, 610 Woodmere Ave. There will be a brief talk by an experienced grief counselor and a panel discussion with individuals who have gone through the grieving process.

Written resources and information on area agencies and support groups will be available.

Demonstration of Nordic ski walking

TRAVERSE CITY -- Free Nordic ski walking clinics will be held on Oct. 21 at the Bay Ridge Retirement Community, 3950 Scenic Ridge, off Silver Lake Road. All ages and all fitness levels are welcome.

Ski-walking is a good workout option for anyone with balance issues, arthritis, neuropathy or other health issues that make walking a challenge.

Because of the extra arm movement, walking with real Nordic Ski Walking Poles burns up to 40 percent more calories than normal walking.

Pete Edwards will lead ski-walking clinics at 11 a.m. in the private dining room at Bay Ridge East and at 1 p.m. in the main dining room at Bay Ridge West.
