-- Three students from The Woodland School in Traverse City have been named local winners in the 2009 America & Me essay contest sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. Andy Marvin received first place, Kiera Fisher received second place and Zach Cameron garnered third place. Andy will have his name engraved on a plaque for permanent display at the school, and he advances to the state competition for a $500 U.S. savings bond and a $500 cash award.
-- Two local students are competing in the Poetry Out Loud State Championship: Kristi Leitow, Alba Public Schools and Taylor Maddox, The Leelanau School. The state winner gets $200 and trip to national finals in Washington, D.C.
-- Traverse City Area Public Schools and Harvard Project Zero: Artful Thinking are among 50 model professional development programs featured in the handbook, "Designing the Arts Learning Community: a Handbook for K-12 Professional Development Planners." TCAPS' Long Lake Elementary School and Traverse City West Middle School have modeled the Artful Thinking Program in their schools since 2003.
-- Eastern Elementary School Library Club, which has been collecting pennies to benefit the "Pennies for Peace" organization since January, collected $1,336.07 to be sent to Greg Mortenson's "Pennies for Peace" program.
-- Traverse City Area Public Schools Board of Education recently presented a high school diploma to World War II veteran Harold Earl Glouch, who attended Traverse City High School from 1938-42. He earned an American Theater Ribbon, Distinguished Unit Badge, One Oak Leaf Cluster Good Conduct Ribbon, European African Middle East Theater Ribbon with one silver and four bronze battle stars while serving in the military.
-- Jessie Smith, 9, of Traverse City, is one of five children nationwide who was chosen as a KidzArt Featured Artist. Smith's artwork will be displayed on the KidzArt online art gallery (www.kidzart.com/gallery.php) and featured in the 2010 KidzArt printed calendar. Smith also received a certificate of achievement from KidzArt in Traverse City.
-- The Northwestern Michigan College Barbecue Board has selected the college programs that will share more than $40,000 in funding. This year's recipients are: Automotive Technology, $4,000; Heath Occupations, $12,109; Extended Education Services, $4,500; Educational Media Technologies, $4,400; Drafting & Design, $12,000.
-- Seth Hoard, a Hope College freshman from Traverse City, recently appeared as a groom in the cast of "Big Love," Hope College Theatre's first production of the spring semester. He is the son of Marc and Julia Hoard and a 2008 graduate of Traverse City Central High School.
