• L. L. Wright, state superintendent of public instruction, in an address to the teachers of the city Friday afternoon, propounded in detailed form the theory of introducing more practical instruction into the present system of education and eliminating the unnecessary study which only means a waste of time. He stated that one great fault lies in the fact that the system is arranged with the idea that every graduate will go to college. However, only five percent do go on to higher education.

• For the first time in several years the skating on Grand Traverse Bay is all that could be desired. On Sunday about 500 men, women and children enjoyed this pastime on the rink near the middle of the bay out from the G. R. & I. station, effected through the efforts of the Recreation Club.

• Miss Mary Stites was hostess at a Flinch party last Monday afternoon at her parents' home in Williamsburg in honor of her twelfth birthday. Miss Lillian Gain won first prize and Miss Caddie Magee consolation.

• D. Carpenter went to Slights this afternoon where he will remain for night and from there proceed on his way to Bellingham, Washington. He will make his future residence at that place.

• Glen Paton and John Acschliman were brought before Judge Nerlinger last Monday on a complaint of Deputy Game Warden G. Allen Smith and William Kittle who charged them with killing ducks out of season. They plead guilty to the charges and were fined $10 and costs amounting to $2.75 each which they paid.

• Bird lovers are noting with interest the visitation of a flock of pine grosbeaks within the city limits. The flock seems to consist mostly of females and young males not yet in full plumage, nevertheless strikingly beautiful in their markings of saffron yellow or red.

• Advice on deportment. When someone enters a room, ladies do a little curtsy and men greet with a bow.

• Medical advice of a century ago. In the third decade of life many excesses in work or in dissipation may be indulged in without any ill resulting.
