'Biggest Loser' contest at Murray's

East Jordan — Murray's Bar & Grill is sponsoring a four-month "Biggest Loser" contest.

Interested men and women must join the Murray's Biggest Loser Club for $10 to participate. Club members are invited to Murray's, 115 Main St., from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays, Feb.6-May 28, for an affordable lunch, guest speakers and a private weigh-in. There are prizes for weekly weight-loss winners and a cash reward for the "biggest loser" at the end of the contest.

Habitat for Humanity Application Fairs

Traverse City — Habitat for Humanity Grand Traverse Region will hold Application Fairs to distribute applications for homes being built in Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Kalkaska counties.

Fairs start at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, and at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in the Community Room at the Grand Traverse Mall, South Airport Road, and include a 45-minute informational meeting explaining the qualifications for home ownership. Attendance is required to be considered for a Habitat home.

Seminar focuses on the 'Art of Marriage'

Traverse City — Orchard Church will offer a two-day "Art of Marriage" seminar, a fast-paced six-part video series produced by Family Life Today Ministries.

The seminar will meet 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and 1-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at Traverse City Christian School, 753 Emerson.

The cost is $60 per couple and includes workbooks and lunch both days.

Free harp workshop helps healing

Traverse City — A free tranquillity harp workshop will focus on how the sound and vibrations of the instrument promote healing and relaxation.

Better breathing series in Grayling

Grayling — Mercy Hospital will offer an eight-week "Better Breathing" series.

Classes meet from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 13-April 9 (no class March 26) in the Huron Pines Room at Mercy Hospital. The goal is to improve the quality of life for adults suffering from emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma and other breathing problems.

Arts & Crafts Show benefits Third Level

Traverse City — More than 40 exhibitors will participate in an arts and crafts show for Third Level Crisis Intervention Center.

"Fall in Love with Third Level" Arts and Crafts Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center. Admission is free, but donations of personal care items, non-perishable food, paper products and craft supplies are encouraged.

Lions quarterback joins Polar Plunge

Acme — Detroit Lions quarterback Drew Stanton will join the Traverse City Polar Plunge for Special Olympics.

Stanton, a long-time supporter of Special Olympics Michigan, will join other Polar Plungers on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa Clubhouse. Registration starts at 10 a.m., followed by a Parade of Costumes and the Polar Plunge at 11 a.m. A post-plunge party and awards ceremony will follow.

Traverse City — First Baptist Church will host its second Sweet Shop sale just in time for Valentine's Day.

Cardiologist talks about heart disease

GT Pavilions offers new aquatic class

Traverse City — Adults can jump start their mornings at a new aquatics class at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.

The "Morning Jump Start" class will meet 8-9 a.m. Mondays and Thursdays, Feb. 13-March 15, at The Wellness Center at the Pavilions off South Elmwood Avenue. It is for active adults of all ages with minimal or no restrictions.

RN-AIM meeting and program

Traverse City — Holly Edmondson, director of nursing at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, will provide a dementia update at the Tuesday, Feb. 14, meeting of the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan.

The group will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the REMEC classroom at Munson Medical Center, 1105 Sixth St. The free meeting and program will be broadcast to Grayling Mercy Hospital and one continuing education hour will be awarded to registered nurses attending the entire presentation.

Potential foster parent orientation

Traverse City — An orientation to the process of becoming a licensed foster home will be held Thursday, Feb. 16.

Child advocate training to be held

Traverse City — Probate and Family Court Volunteers will offer training to become a Court Appointed Special Advocate for children in foster care.

The comprehensive, 30-hour training is presented in partnership with seven human services agencies. It will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, at the Robert P. Griffin Hall of Justice, 280 Washington St. A pre-registration interview is required.

Dance-off stars at Special Olympics

Dance partners Max Dingeman and Jennifer Howard will perform during the closing ceremonies for the Michigan Special Olympics.

The pair took first place in the 2011 SwingShift and the Stars Dance-Off for Charity, raising money for VSA.

They'll perform at 7:40 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Governor's Hall at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. Dingeman also will serve as a guest judge for the costume contest portion of the Polar Plunge, scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, also at the Resort.

Rapid City Winter Carnival for PTA

Rapid City — A winter carnival will take place today to benefit the Rapid City PTA.

Activities will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rapid City School. There will be a pancake breakfast, lunch, craft show, bounce room and other activities for adults and children.

Suttons Bay — The Suttons Bay Conservation League is offering two $1,000 scholarships.

Applications are due Thursday, March 1, for the Frank Throop Memorial Scholarship and the Leon Smith Memorial Scholarship. Both Throop and Smith were founding members of the league.

Zonta offers award to young women

Traverse City — Applications are due Friday, March 2, for the Zonta Club of Traverse City's Young Women in Public Affairs Award.
