Frankfort quarterback headed to Northwood

BY JAMES COOK

TRAVERSE CITY -- Frankfort quarterback Dan Nugent might continue throwing the football to teammate Andrew Newbold for a long time to come.

Nugent will sign a national letter of intent with Northwood on Wednesday, the first day football players can officially commit to play collegiately.

Frankfort coach Matt Stapleton said Newbold -- an all-state wide receiver -- has indicated he could also end up at Northwood as a preferred walk-on.

Nugent accounted for 30 touchdowns this season for the Panthers, throwing for 18 and running for 12 more. Whereas some schools wanted Nugent to play safety -- where he had 106 tackles and five interceptions over the last two seasons -- his experience as an option quarterback fit the Timberwolves' offense.

"He was making all the visits to a lot of schools ... but Northwood is recruiting him as an option quarterback," Stapleton said. "They run a similar offense to ours."

Northwood has two senior quarterbacks on its roster, as well as redshirt freshman Joe Bitterman.

Frankfort kicker Alex Gokey is also getting some looks from Division II and III schools.

Traverse City West standout defensive end Craig Wilson is apparently headed to Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State, Titans coach Tim Wooer said.

Wilson was a first-team all-state pick, registering 72 tackles despite missing three games due to injury.

Traverse City St. Francis players Max Bullough and Matt Zakrzewski have already committed to Division 1 programs. Bullough is already enrolled at Michigan State, while Zakrzewski has verbally committed to Indiana, along with Charlevoix lineman Bill Ivan.

TC West offensive lineman Blake Goodell has accepted a scholarship offer from Northern Illinois, and Titans teammate Anthony West is considering Northwood, Ferris State and Northern Arizona.
