Prep Roundup: West wins soccer season finale

Traverse City West tuned up for districts with a 2-0 win over Cadillac in the Titans' regular-season finale.

Brady Fagan scored twice for the Titans (13-5-1, 7-2-1 Big North Conference), once in the first half off a Mitch Taplin assist and again in the second, set up by Ricardo Rodriguez.

Ben Casciano made two saves for West, which starts district play Monday. The Titans travel to play Alpena at 5 p.m., then would return to play TC Central on Wednesday at the Coast Guard if they defeat the Wildcats. West beat Alpena 5-0 and 8-0 this season.

Gaylord 1

Greg Merica scored a pair of goals -- both off Miles Beauchamp assists -- in the first 10 minutes to propel Traverse City Central to a 4-1 victory over Gaylord.

Trevor Osburn put the Trojans up 3-0 off a Kevin Trippe assist before Gaylord's Dustin Mastej made it 3-1 at halftime.

Jordan deTar found the net with help from Merica to finish off the scoring.

Josh Lance and Colin Lesoski split time in net for Central.

The Trojans (15-6, 6-4 BNC) await the winner of Alpena and Traverse City West for a district game on Wednesday.

Central won the JV game 2-0 to finish the season 21-1 as Dillon Lizenby and Kalvis Hornburg scored goals and Cooper Macdonell and Connor Kerndt picked up assists. Briggs Chapman earned the shutout in net.

TC Christian 5
Buckley 0

Traverse City Christian finished off a perfect Great Northwest Conference season with a 5-0 win over Buckley.

The Sabres (20-12) finish the GNC season 12-0.

Jason Send scored two goals and added an assist for Christian, while Taehoon Kim, Ian Spencer and Michael Weber had single goals. Scottie Raetz and Peter Mustard added assists.

Jonathan Rudolph and David Gallagher split time in goal.

The Sabres will play the winner of Kalkaska and Boyne City in district play on Wednesday in Kalkaska.

Kalkaska 3

Tucker Hogarth and Greg Manning each scored two goals as Elk Rapids defeated Kalkaska 7-3 to close out the regular season.

Hogarth added an assist and Parker Hogarth, Justin Veliquette and Patrick Moran also had goals.

Oskar Salmhofer, Zach Vandeveer, Braden Ackerman and Moran had assists, while Nick Thompson posted the win in net.

The Elks will play the Charlevoix-Grayling winner on Wednesday in districts at Kalkaska.

SWIMMING

TC Central, West beat Ogemaw Heights

Traverse City's Central and West swim teams hit the road and picked up wins at Ogemaw Heights.

The Titans (4-4) won 135-44 while the Trojans (3-5) were 114-66 winners.

West's Shelby Newhouse won the 100 freestyle (1:00.25), the 100 breaststroke (1:13.64) and the 200 relay (1:52.15) with Kirsten Palmer, Haley Schworm and Kate Reed.

Sarah Brunner won the 200 IM (2:25.97), the 100 butterfly (1:04.46) and the 200 medley relay (2:04.62) with Paige Rogers, Schworm and Palmer.

Palmer had a MISCA qualifying time in the 50 free (26.66), Paige Keith won the 200 freestyle (2:20.14), Kendall Cox took the diving (193.40) and Shea Williams won the 100 backstroke (1:07.55).

The Titans also took the 400 relay (4:14.27) with Megan Cepela, Toni Zotter, Lauren Sieloff and Keith.

Central's Nadine Tueck won the 200 IM (2:39.45), the 100 breaststroke (1:23.33), the 200 relay (1:55.08) with Erin Cover, Michelle Rizor and Claire Wodzien and the 200 medley relay (2:15.80) with Chloe Seymour, Lauren Pflughoeft and Rizor.

Wodzien won the 200 freestyle (2:12.49), the 500 free (5:57.46) and the 400 relay (4:12.12) with Cover, Pflughoeft and Seymour.

Cover took the 50 free (27.07) and the 100 free (59.38) Rizor won diving (165.25) and Seymour won the 100 backstroke (1:17.31).

FOOTBALL

St. Francis JV 38
Grayling JV 12

The Traverse City St. Francis JV scored 20 unanswered points in the second half for a 38-12 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling.

The Gladiators (7-1, 6-0 LMC) had three touchdowns from Ryan McDonnell, coming on 45, 40 and 96-yard runs. Jack Jamieson had scores of 40 and 28 yards, while Seth Kellicut picked up a punt after Grayling blocked it and ran it 68 yards for a TD.

Grayling's Zane Toban had a 9-yard touchdown pass to Devin Dawson while Craig Collen scored on a 3-yard run.

Defensively, McDonnell had three interceptions while Isaiah Schaub, Kyle White and Ashton Martenson had strong games.

Cheboygan JV 6

Ryan Vershuren scored three touchdowns as Traverse City Central's JV picked up a 50-6 non-conference win over Cheboygan.

The Trojans (6-2) also had touchdowns from Ryan Gemmell, Tyler Clark, Dylan Kelly and Boone Marios. One of Vershuren's scores was on a pass from Joey Prokes.

Clark and Brandon McKee each had a two-point conversion, Rustam Djaparov kicked four PATs while Malcolm and Noah Lalonde led the defense.
