Goodwill looking for food pantry help

TRAVERSE CITY -- Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan is asking for the community's help to replenish its food pantry.

The nonprofit agency provides meals to people staying at the Goodwill Inn homeless shelter, as well as gives food to local residents in need.

Spokeswoman Ruth Blick said year-to-date requests for assistance are at 4,023, 242 percent more than last year.

About 1,200 requests were made in May, June and July alone, compared to 1,350 in all of 2007, Blick said.

Items in need are tuna and other canned meats, spaghetti sauce, soups and stews, cereal, pancake mix, syrup, juice, canned fruit, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese and personal hygiene items. Baby food and diapers also are needed.

Donations can be taken to the Goodwill Inn, 2943 Keystone Road, or to the Goodwill store, 2279 S. Airport Road, both in Garfield Township.

Gifts of cash can be made online at www.goodwillnmi.org.
