Roundup: McBain gets district rematch

FARWELL — A year ago, McBain beat Pine River twice during the regular season then lost to the Bucks in the Class C girls district.

The Ramblers are hoping for a change in fortune this time.

McBain advanced to the district final Thursday — opposite Pine River — with a 67-41 win over the host Farwell Eagles.

Annemarie Hamlet had 20 points, 11 assists and seven steals for McBain, now 21-1. Meredith Hamlet added 19 points and six rebounds. The Ramblers enjoyed a 34-17 lead at half.

Gaylord SM 64 Wolverine 17

It will be an all-Ski Valley final in the Class D district final at Rogers City after Gaylord St. Mary posted a 64-17 win over Wolverine.

The Snowbirds (20-1) will face Onaway. Karli Jacob paced St. Mary in its semifinal win with 21 points. Christina Smith added 16. Sarah Long pulled down nine rebounds.

Onaway 65 Rogers City 43

Onaway pulled away in the second half to beat Rogers City in a Class D district semifinal 65-43.

The Cardinals (14-7) led 29-24 at half.

Sam Freel paced the Onaway attack with 19 points. Molly Cleaver added 14 and Kallie Shimel 13. Megan Estep grabbed 17 rebounds.

Heroin overdose kills man

Benzie County's struggle with fatal heroin overdoses continues. Authorities confirmed Justin Smith, 23, of Benzonia, was found dead Wednesday night of a heroin overdose. Law enforcement officials arrested a suspect in Smith's death, the fourth heroin-related fatality in the county since 2011.
