Prep Sports Roundup: 19-1 Glads tie school record

TRAVERSE CITY — St. Francis tied a school record by finishing the regular season 19-1 after a 76-58 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Elk Rapids on Thursday.

That lone loss came Tuesday to Glen Lake.

“I was glad we got a chance to play another game before the tournament,” St. Francis coach Keith Haske said. “We’re looking forward to the tournament. Hopefully, we can keep things going.”

The Gladiators, who finished 14-0 in winning back-to-back league titles, led 41-24 at half.

Five St. Francis players reached double figures. Byron Bullough led with 16 points, Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi 14, Connor Archer 12, Kody Kleinrichert 11 and Austin Currie 10. Sheehy-Guiseppi added eight assists.

Austin McMullen’s 16 points topped Elk Rapids (9-11, 6-8). Shae Somers added 12 and Adam Trautman 11.

St. Francis won the JV game 50-41 as Gus Banz netted nine points for the 10-9 Gladiators. Cody Waite’s 11 points paced Elk Rapids.

Charlevoix 75

Grayling 50

A hot start got Charlevoix off and running in a 75-50 Lake Michigan Conference win over Grayling.

“I thought we played the best game of the year for us,” Rayders coach Adam Wood said.

Charlevoix (14-5) jumped out to a 16-0 start and never looked back. The lead was 41-21 at half.

Charlie Hamilton knocked down eight 3-pointers for 30 points. Zach Hankins had 12 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks while Sawyer Russell had 12 points and eight boards.

Tanner Catt also dished out 14 assists.

Scott Parkinson had 18 points for the Vikings.

Charlevoix travels to Boyne City on Monday to play the Ramblers in the Class C opener.

Cadillac 52

TC Central 50

Cadillac held off Traverse City Central for a 52-50 Big North Conference win, creating a three-way tie for the league title.

Cadillac, Traverse City West and Petoskey all finished 9-3 in the Big North. Petoskey defeated Gaylord 63-34 on Thursday. West closed out its league season last week.

It did not come easy for the Vikings against Central despite a 27-13 lead at half.

“Coach (Jeff) Turner’s team never gave up,”Cadillac coach Jeff McDonald said. “They played hard, which is a real credit to them.”

The Trojans finished the regular season 5-15.

“It was a tale of two halves,” Turner said. “They controlled the first half, we controlled the second. We had a couple opportunities to tie it, a credit to the effort the kids put forth. They know we’re so close (to winning the tight games).”

Jalen Brooks led Cadillac (15-4) with 17 points. Nick Paquet added 15. Taylor Cook’s 16 points topped Central. Ethan Pilarski added 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Cadillac won the JV game 53-37. Joe Shepperly netted 16 points and Jake Lesoski 11 for the Trojans.

The Vikings took the freshman game 32-23. Logan Hayden tallied nine points for Central, which is at West in a Class A district game Monday.

GR Christian 69

TC West 47

Grand Rapids Christian posted a 69-47 win over TC West.

The Titans finish the regular season 12-8. Jeremiah Williams had 20 points in the loss while Kendrick Meyer scored eight points.

TC West hosts TC Central on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Class A district opener.

GR Christian won the JV game 66-25. The Titans (10-10) had six points each from Adam Peplinski and Thiyo Lukusa.

Glen Lake 42

Benzie Central 35

Mike O’Brien scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as Glen Lake capped an 18-2 regular season with a 42-35 Northwest Conference win over Benzie Central.

The Lakers had already clinched the league title. They finished 13-1 in the league.

Corey Weaver netted 16 for Benzie.

The game was tied at 20-20 at half.

Suttons Bay 53

Mesick 26

Suttons Bay continued its torrid play with a 53-26 Northwest Conference win over Mesick.

The Norsemen (7-12), who have won five of their last six games, travel to Mesick tonight in a return engagement.

Guy Beachnau scored 11 points and Aaron Orban 10 in the win. Andre Whittaker led Mesick with 10.

Kingsley 69

Frankfort 57

Kingsley took a 35-18 halftime lead and held it for a 69-57 Northwest Conference win over Frankfort.

The Stags had 19 points from Micah Weesner while Tristan Eickenroth scored 18 points.

Frankfort (15-5, 9-5 NCW) was led by Owen Stratton with 31 points.

Leland 79

Buckley 43

A.J. Whittaker scored 20 points as Leland topped Buckley 79-43.

The Bears had 10 points each from Austin Burmania, Dustin Tandy and Luke Somsel.

Boyne Falls 32

Gaylord St. Mary 24

Marcus Matelski scored 12 points as Boyne Falls defeated Gaylord St. Mary 32-24 in a non-league game.

The Loggers led 14-9 at half.

Matt Spyhalski netted 13 for St. Mary (8-12), which plays Bellaire in a Class D district Monday.

Bellaire 62

Inland Lakes 36

For the second time this week, Bellaire earned a Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.

Thursday’s win for the Eagles was 62-36. They won 67-36 on Tuesday.

Bellaire (19-0) had 18 points from Tyler Thornton while Mitch Teetzel had 12 points and six rebounds. Drew Bailey chipped in nine points.

Cody Bonilla and Dakota Davedowski each had nine points for Inland Lakes.

Manistee CC 55

Onekama 44

Manistee Catholic had a big night from Zack Bialik in a 55-44 Western Michigan D League victory over Onekama.

Bialik had 34 points for the Sabers (16-3, 15-1 WMDL) including 21-for-24 from the free-throw line. Andrew Perry added nine points and eight rebounds while Ben Feliczak had seven points and four boards.

Bryce Rackow had 22 points for Onekama.

Kalkaska 71

Forest Area 48

Kalkaska closed the regular season on a high note with a 71-48 win over Forest Area.

The Blazers (4-16) led 28-6 at the half.

Caleb Gelinas had 31 points and seven rebounds for Kalkaska while Will Nobel had 16 points, five assists and seven steals. Aaron Zimmerman had 12 points and five assists.

Chad Roberts scored 17 points for Forest Area.

TC Christian 54

GT Academy 37

TC Christian pulled down 21 offensive rebounds in a 54-37 win over GT Academy.

The Sabres (13-5) had 28 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks from Kris Crosby while Paul Bump had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. David Bump added eight boards.

Baldwin 65

Bear Lake 51

Baldwin topped Bear Lake, 65-51 in Western Michigan D League play.

The Lakers (11-8) had 14 points and 12 rebounds from Riley Merrill while Josh Metiva had 12 points and 12 boards.

Brandon Childress had 23points for Baldwin while Andon Ware had 21 points.

DeTour 86

Burt Lake NMCA 44

DeTour picked up an 86-44 win over Burt Lake NMCA.

The Eagles (8-10) had 33 points and 10 rebounds from Aaron Chatfield.

WRESTLING

St. Francis gets two wins at finals opener

St. Francis opened the Division 4 individual state finals with wins from Jake Khoury and Zach Schaub.

The finals run through Saturday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

At heavyweight, Khoury pinned Austin Baker from Cass City in 5:00. Schaub topped Schoolcraft’s Zac Sharp 13-12 at 119 pounds.

St. Francis’ other two state qualifiers came up short in their openers, but will look to stay alive today in the consolation bracket. Eric Wales lost 9-3 to Carson City-Crystal’s Kennith Dittenber at 112 pounds while Matt Mawby lost 7-0 to Montrose’s Steven Garza at 130 pounds.

In Division 3, Grayling’s Jon Martin pinned Caro’s Trevor O’Connor in 2:15 at 103 pounds.

Kingsley’s Brian Lark and Josh Parks each fell in the opening round. Lark lost to Capac’s Dan Cornish 192- at 171 pounds while Parks lost to Chesaning’s Trenton Devereaux 5-0 at 215 pounds.

Benzie Central’s York Ash dropped a 17-6 decision to Parchment’s Andy Caffrey at 119 pounds.
