TC West Middle School receives funds
TRAVERSE CITY -- Traverse City West Middle School received $188,263 in federal funds to construct paths near the campus on Silver Lake Road and start a school club for walkers and bikers.
The dollars are part of the nation's Safe Routes to School program and are distributed through the Michigan Department of Transportation.
West Middle School is one of six schools in the state chosen for the grants, which total about $1.3 million.
The Grand Traverse County Road Commission and Garfield Township also will work on the project. An MDOT official said engineering and administrative costs will have to be covered locally.
