Pistons youth camp is Sunday

TRAVERSE CITY — The Detroit Pistons will host a youth basketball camp at Traverse City West Senior High on Sunday.

The session runs from 2-4 p.m. and will instruct boys and girls in grades K-6 on shooting, passing and dribbling, defense and rebounding.

Boynton takes over YMCA soccer

TRAVERSE CITY — Rob Boynton has been named soccer coordinator for the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA.

Boynton has coached YMCA, travel and select soccer. He's presently head coach of the Traverse City Central boys varsity team and junior varsity girls team.

One of the first changes Boynton plans to make is in player development. Instead of the traditional 11 versus 11 format, he plans to decrease the number of players on the field and on the teams at the younger levels to increase the number of touches and time on the ball for each player. The smaller teams will play on smaller fields to allow for more individual attention.

As players grow, the teams and fields will grow in size, too. Players in grades K-2 will work in a 5 versus 5 format, grades 3-5 in 8 versus 8 format, while middle school grades will play in 11 versus 11 on regulation sized fields.

Boynton also intends to expand the opportunities for coaches in a series of clinics.

The registration deadline for spring soccer is March 19. The season extends from the week of April 9 to the week of May 14. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.gtbayymca.org.
