EAST JORDAN -- A construction crew found an old artillery shell while digging a phone line in Charlevoix County's South Arm Township.
Sheriff's officials responded around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to Nagashi Drive, off Dutchman's Bay Road. They called Michigan State Police bomb squad units to the scene and it was determined the shell was live.
MSP officials were unable to X-ray the shell, so they transported it to Camp Grayling where a military representative from Fort Knox met them to destroy it.
Authorities said it is unknown how the shell came to be in Charlevoix County and no one was injured during its recovery.
