TRAVERSE CITY — Freshman Marcus Matelski scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as Boyne Falls upended Traverse City Christian 53-45 in a non-conference game Thursday.
Andrew Stevens added 10 for the Loggers.
Paul Bump led TC Christian (1-1) with 20 points and Kris Crosby added 17.
BOYS HOOPS
Bellaire 69 Ellsworth 18
Bellaire opened the season with a lock-down defense, limiting Ellsworth in a 69-18 non-conference victory.
Mitch Teetzel led the Eagles (1-0) with 17 point and three steals, James Schrader added 14 points, Denny Hall chipped in 13 points and four steals and Drew Bailey 11 contributed 11 points.
Nate Veldboom led Ellsworth (0-2) with eight points.
Gaylord St. Mary 49 Harbor Light 20
Gaylord St. Mary moved to 2-0 on the season with a 49-20 non-conference win over Harbor Light Academy.
The Snowbirds had 18 points from Charles Strehl while Lucas Matthews scored nine for Harbor Light.
Lake City 69 Mancelona 43
Lake City exploded for 41 first-half points in a 69-43 non-conference win over Mancelona.
The Trojans (2-0) had 17 points from Ryan Vincent while Drew Marion chipped in 11 points.
For the Ironmen (0-2), Griffin Borst led the way with 15 points while Brandon Dingman had six rebounds.
McBain NMC 51 Manistee CC 50
McBain NMC earned a narrow 51-50 win over Manistee Catholic Central.
Zach Bialik had 19 points for the Sabers.
Petoskey frosh 58 St. Francis frosh 18
Petoskey's freshmen earned a 58-18 win over the St. Francis freshmen.
Jake Klinglesmith scored six points for the Glads.
GIRLS HOOPS
Cadillac 47 TC Central 38
Cadillac spoiled the start of Big North Conference play for TC Central with a 47-38 win.
The Vikings took a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and made it 29-17 at the break. Mary Marae-Baker led Cadillac with eight points.
For the Trojans (0-2, 0-1 BNC), Madi Bankey had 11 points, Tyler Rawlings had 10 points while Jesse Hiemstera had four points and nine rebounds.
Cadillac won the JV game 32-22.
TC Central took the freshman game 55-21 behind 24 points from Abigail Green and 10 points from Emily Jenkins.
Petoskey 43 Gaylord 25
Petoskey picked up a 43-25 Big North Conference win over Gaylord.
Kelsey Ance had 14 points for the Northmen (2-1) while Megan Tompkins added eight points.
Benzie Central 47 Leland 25
Benzie Central had a big night from Jordan Nye in a 47-25 Northwest Conference win over Leland.
Nye led the Huskies (2-2, 1-0 NWC) with 10 points, 10 steals and six assists. Paige Sauer also chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
Libby Munoz led the Comets with nine points.
Frankfort 49 Buckley 27
Frankfort jumped out to a 37-15 halftime lead for a 49-27 Northwest Conference win over Buckley.
The Panthers had 11 points from McKenna Kelly.
Buckley had 11 points and 10 rebounds from Jordyn Barley while Bailee Kuhn had nine points and nine rebounds.
Glen Lake 58 Suttons Bay 34
Scotlyn Brengman broke loose for 30 points and Glen Lake surged to an early 17-0 lead in a 58-34 Northwest Conference victory over Suttons Bay.
She also added eight rebounds and three steals.
Jordan Peplinski added 11 points and six boards, Katie Stowe chipped in seven points, five rebounds and four steals and Holly Dowd had five points, five rebounds and five steals.
Andrea Emery led Suttons Bay with 14 points.
Kalkaska 63 Manton 30
Kalkaska notched a 63-30 non-conference win over Manton.
Kelli Guy paced the Blazers with 25 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Tabitha Kibby registered 10 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Alayna Stewart had eight points and Ellie Barber pitched in eight rebounds, five points and three assists for Kalkaska (2-0).
Karrah Baker scored 12 points and Jurrica Stanley nine for the Rangers.
Kingsley 69 Mesick 19
Autumn Goggin put up 22 points and five steals to lead Kingsley to a 69-19 Northwest Conference victory over Mesick.
Lilly Travis added 10 points, while Andrea Lee grabbed 10 rebounds.
Gabby Kline led Mesick with nine points.
The Stags (3-1, 1-0 NWC) host Elk Rapids on Tuesday.
TC Bulldogs 38 Northport 14
Balanced scoring led the Traverse City Bulldogs to a 38-14 victory over Northport.
Becca Wilkinson, Sarah Plamondon and Casie Plamondon each scored 10 points, while Molly Plamondon added eight.
Yesenia Perez was the leading scorer for the Wildcats (1-2) with seven.
The Bulldogs (3-1) host Grand Traverse Academy today at Elizabeth Ann Seton Middle School.
