Traverse City West wins BNC swim meet

Traverse City West swam to a first-place finish at Gaylord in the first Big North Conference meet.

The Titans scored 538 points, followed by TC Central (311), Gaylord (298) and Alpena (156).

TC West had four pool record on the night. The team of Elly Maleski, Shelby Newhouse, Sarah Brunner and Kirstin Palmer won the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 56.5 seconds, Brunner took the 100 butterfly in 1:02.74, Maleski, Meghan Cepela , Newhouse and Brunner won the 400 relay in 3:53.94 while Cepela took the 50 free in 25.60.

Cepela's win was also a state-qualifying time.

Other winners for West included Newshoue in the 200 IM (2:28.70), Kendall Cox in diving (308.90), Cepela in the 100 freestyle (57.29), Maleski in the 100 backstroke (1:05.26), Newhouse in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.52) and Cepela, Kate Reed, Paige Keith and Palmer in the 200 relay (1:50.50).

The Trojans finished the Traverse City sweep with wins in the other two events. Claire Wodzien won both the 200 (2:06.45) and the 500 (5:54.24).
