Roger W. Poikey

CENTRAL LAKE — Roger W. Poikey, 77, of Central Lake, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 13, in Pinellas Park, Fla., after suffering a brain aneurysm.

He was born Nov. 7, 1934, in Detroit, the son of Harvey and Eleanor (Detmer) Poikey.

Roger proudly served his country from 1953 to 1955 in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

In 1961 he became a police officer in Detroit, where he was shot and wounded during the 1967 riots.

He retired from the police department in 1969 and moved his family north to Central Lake in 1970.

He worked in Bellaire at the gas station with his cousin, Bud Holland. Later Roger owned and operated Bellaire Auto Repair.

Roger enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin on his 40 acres. He cherished his family and loved spending time with them.

On Feb. 9, 1957, in Detroit, he married Judith Ann Cary, who survives. Also surviving are his children, William (Marcia), of Ada, Jeff, of Big Bay, and Jodi (Glen DeRosha), of Elk Rapids; grandchildren, Brent, Elizabeth, Nick, Cary, Alexandra and Ariane; brother, Donald, of St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Clayton, Harvey and Gary.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 18, at 1 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with Pastor Gary Bekkering officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, March 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., also at the funeral home.
