Bums sign pair of hurlers from tryout

TRAVERSE CITY -- The Traverse City Beach Bums signed two pitchers -- DaShone Kirkendoll and Mickey Cassidy -- from the team's open tryout in Indianapolis last month.

Kirkendoll -- a 6-foot-5, 240-pound left-hander from of Dayton, Ohio -- started his collegiate career at Temple, where he played both baseball and basketball. He appeared in 10 games over two seasons for the Owls baseball team. For the basketball team, Kirkendoll appeared in 76 games over three seasons (2004-07) and averaged 2.4 points per contest. He transferred to NAIA Ohio Dominican for his senior season.

At Temple, he had an ERA of 15.00, striking out 19 in 12 innings.

Cassidy is a right-handed submarine pitcher who started pitching only after going undrafted as an infielder out of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). He spent the summer following his senior season playing for the Bay Area Toros in the independent Continental League. In 11 relief appearances, he went 1-0 with one save and a 2.25 ERA.

The Beach Bums will be holding a second tryout in Indianapolis on March 27. The team will also hold a May 8 tryout at Wuerfel Park starting at 9 a.m.
