Hearing on vacation rentals rescheduled

TRAVERSE CITY -- A public hearing on vacation home rentals will be rescheduled.

The hearing originally was planned for the city commission's Feb. 19 meeting, but will be postponed until March 17 to allow for a sufficient public notice period.

Commissioners last month rejected a zoning ordinance amendment that would allow the rentals in single and two-family residential zones. They're now considering ordinance language to clarify that the rentals are legal in commercial zones.

The draft amendment defines a vacation home rental as the "commercial use of a dwelling where the dwelling is rented for any term less than 30 consecutive days and such rental occurs more than 14 days a year." Commissioners might drop the 14-day provision because it would provide a way for the rentals to exist in residential zones.
