TRAVERSE CITY -- The manager of a local Subway pocketed more than $10,000 from the restaurant, police said.
Authorities last week charged Darlyn Glee Grames, 44, of Cadillac, with a count of embezzlement of between $1,000 and $20,000 by an agent or trustee. The felony charge is punishable by up to five years in prison and/or $10,000.
"They're a small business, and to have this amount of money stolen or found missing ... it's a lot of money in this time," said Sgt. Ingrid Dean, of the Michigan State Police Traverse City Post.
Grames managed the Subway restaurant inside Walmart in Garfield Township since 2007, but was fired in January.
The owner told police that he noticed deposits went missing shortly after cameras were removed during restaurant remodeling. He contacted the bank to see why the money had not been deposited, but bank representatives told him the problem stemmed from his restaurant.
That's when he contacted authorities. Police reviewed the restaurant's daily financial reports, and found missing deposits exceeding $500 on 14 occasions. The cash, $10,297, was embezzled over a course of 10 months.
Police interviewed Grames this month, and she allegedly told authorities that she took the money because "she was having financial difficulties," court records show.
Grames "told the owner that she had taken some money, and was going to try to get a loan to pay the money back, but that never materialized," according to police reports. Her admission ultimately led to her job termination.
