New fire house to be built in Garfield

TRAVERSE CITY -- A new fire house will be built in Grand Traverse County's Garfield Township, largely funded with federal stimulus dollars.

The Grand Traverse Metro Emergency Services Authority received a $2.8 million grant to construct a new fire station to serve the west side of Garfield Township. Such a fire station has been planned for several years but officials did not want to ask taxpayers for construction money during current bad economic conditions, said Metro Fire Chief Patrick Parker.

The new station will be built as a 10,400-square-foot, single-story building on a three-acre parcel within the Silver Lake Recreation Park off East Silver Lake Road. Total project cost is $3.4 million, Parker said.
