Prep Roundup: Titans win tennis tourney

SAGINAW -- Traverse City West traveled to the Saginaw Heritage Invitational Monday and emerged as champion.

The Titans scored 20 points, followed by St. Johns (14) and host Heritage (9).

West swept through all four doubles flights without dropping a set. Joel Collins and Jacob Nestor took the first flight, Luke Hessler and Trevor Tooley won the second, Ian Davis and Nick Tooley teamed for No. 3 while Matt White and Andrew Hartman won the fourth flight.

Gates Muller also was a flight winner for West at No. 4 singles. Carter Jones (No. 2) and Chris Howse (No. 3) were runner-up in their flights.

TC West JV 2

Traverse City St. Francis' Blue JV earned its first win of the year with a 6-2 victory over the TC West JV.

The Gladiators swept singles with Keith Gingras (6-0, 6-2), Briggs Richmond (6-4, 7-6), John O'Neil (6-2, 6-3) and Steve Knape (4-6, 6-4, 6-2). St. Francis won No. 3 doubles with Brendan Barnes/Alex Grombala (6-3, 7-5) while Cole McCardel/Chase Richmond took the fourth flight (6-3, 6-3).

TC West won No. 1 doubles with J.J. Choinard/Kyle Hughey (7-6, 7-3) and the second flight with Tyler Martin/Curtis Bregeman (1-6, 6-1, 6-3).

TC Central Gold JV 2

Cadillac won three doubles flights -- all in three sets -- en route to a 6-2 JV win over the Traverse City Central Gold.

Victorious for the Trojans: Dave Pelizzari at No. 1 singles (6-3, 4-6, 12-10) and Mike Payne and Lucas Nielson at No. 3 doubles (5-7, 6-3, 11-9).

TC Central fifth at Brighton

Traverse City Central finished fifth at the 14-team Brighton Invitational.

Brighton won with 329 while the Trojans shot 374.

Chelsea Guoynes was a shot off medalist honors with a 79. Courtney Dye shot 91, Rachel Jurik had 94 and Kelly White had a 110.

Benzie Central 3
Mason Co. Eastern 3

Benzie Central opened the season with a 3-3 tie against Mason County Eastern.

The Huskies led 3-1 early in the second half after goals from Andrew Worden, Harold Romero and Brandon Baesch. Worden and Romero each had an assist.

Tyler Thurston scored twice for Mason County Eastern.

Forest Area 2
Gladwin 1

Justin Jensen netted a pair of goals as Forest Area defeated Gladwin 2-1.

Tom Runkel and Marco Martinez added assists for the Warriors. Carl Snyder and Cody McCaugh shared goaltending duties.

Forest Area hosts Clare on Wednesday.

TC Christian 3
TC Bulldogs 1

Collin Alpers, Jon Tuck and Walter Meeker scored goals to power Traverse City Christian to a 3-1 win over the Traverse City Bulldogs.

Chris Haapala netted the Bulldogs goal.
