EAST LANSING -- After finishing dead last a year ago, Traverse City Central was much improved Monday in an eighth-place showing at the 20-team East Lansing Invitational.

Grand Rapids South Christian won the meet at Walnut Hills with 334. Jackson Lumen Christi's Melissa Beurman set a tournament record with a 69.

The Trojans were eighth with 363. Rachel Jurik shot 82, Chelsea Guoynes had 85, Courtney Dye had 89 and Maria Frick had 97.

TC West shot 435. Sara Reese had 105, Kali Sanford shot 108, Jordyn Severt and Nicole Schroeder had 112.

Paul Bardenhagen's 10th-place finish led Lake Leelanau St. Mary's to place third in the Division 4 state finals at Ypsilanti's Eagle Crest Golf Course. (plus more golf)

Ex-TC Central golfer to join pro ranks

Bill Rankin is bankin' on a ranking. Or at least hoping. The former Traverse City Central golf standout announced this week that he's turning pro after a four-year career at Michigan that saw him set several Wolverine records.

6 area teams in tennis finals; 2 in golf

State titles in golf and tennis will be on the line this weekend. And northern Michigan will be well represented. Six local teams will compete in tennis while two teams and four individuals will seek honors in golf. The finals run Friday and Saturday at various sites.
